    • In order to prepare thermoplastic molding materials ofA) 5-95% by weight of a modified polyphenylene ether,B) 5 to 95% by weight of a thermoplastic polyamide,C) 0 to 25% by weight of an impact-modifying rubber, andD) 0 to 50% by weight of auxiliaries and/or additives,the components A and B and if necessary the components C and D are fed individually at one or more points into an extruder, mixed with one another, and melted. The component A present in a pulverulent consistency is compacted and/or sintered under pressure and if necessary with the addition of heat, preferably at a pressure corresponding to a nip pressure of 1 to 100 kn/cm to form a porous compact before it is fed into the extruder. The compact is then modified and added as granules to the feed zone of the extruder. In this way the proportion of the fines in the polyphenylene ether is considerably reduced, so that there is virtually no further danger of dust explosions. Further advantages include an improved ease of metering and reduced electrostatic charge.

    • Molding compositions based on polyaryl ethers A, are obtainable by reacting polyaryl ethers I with repeating structural elements ##STR1## or derivatives thereof substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, chlorine or fluorine in the nucleus, where X and Z, independently of one another, are each --SO.sub.2 --, --O--, --S--, >C.dbd.O a chemical bond or --CRR'--, R and R' are each hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or alkoxy, R' is also aryl or fluoro- or chloro-substituted aryl, with the proviso that X and Z are not both --O--, with a reactive compound which, besides a C--C double or triple bond, contains one or more carbonyl, carboxylic acid, carboxylate, acid anhydride, amide, imide, carboxylic ester, amino, hydroxyl, epoxy, oxazoline, urethane, urea, lactam or halobenzyl moieties.

    • A process for producing an isobutene copolymer derivative by: (I) free-radically copolymerizing (a) 10-90 mol % of a monoethylenically unsaturated C4- to C12-dicarboxylic acid, anhydride, or ester, (b) 10-90 mol % of a high-reactivity isobutene polymer having Mn=110-250000 and obtained by polymerizing isobutene in the presence of an iron-halide-, aluminum trihalide-, or alkylaluminum halide-donor complex, each donor being an ether or carboxylic ester function, or in the presence of a Lewis acid complex containing an organic sulfonic acid, and (c) 0-50 mol % of a monoethylenically unsaturated compound copolymerizable with (a) and (b), to obtain an intermediate isobutene copolymer; and (II) reacting the carboxylic acid functions in the intermediate with at least one of ammonia, an amine, and an alcohol, to form a moiety containing at least one of a hydroxyl, carboxylic ester, amino, quaternized amino, amido, and imido group.
