    • A directional small part transporter and sorter simultaneously imparts upon a part-carrying platen reciprocating movements along one or two horizontal axis perpendicular to each other and a third vertical axis. A stack of slidingly coupled carriages are each independently driven by a stepping motor. Each motor is coupled to a carriage by means of a mechanism that translates the rotation of the motor into a linear translation of the coupled carriage by means of a worm screw or transmission belt. An electronic module controlled by a data processor allows for adjustment of the duration, amplitude, frequency and phase relationship of the three periodical movements of the platen. A part reservoir along the platen can be either raised to deliver parts onto the platen or lowered below the platen ledge to receive parts off the platen. The transporter and sorter may be used in connection with various electronic component manufacturing processes.

    • Discrete circuit devices constructed on a component substrate thermally matched to the supporting substrate of a higher level circuit assembly. Upon securing each component to the supporting substrate of a higher level circuit assembly, a connection subject to reduced thermal stress is obtained. In the construction of an exemplary surface mount, hybrid component containing resistors and capacitors, a component substrate of a polyimide impregnated material is populated with a repeating matrix of chip capacitors and chip resistors, which are adhesively bound and soldered to selected termination pads containing high temperature solder filled through vias. The substrate is epoxy encapsulated and then diced at selected ones of the through vias into multiple components. Each thermally matched component is resoldered at the separated vias to obtain surface mount terminations. Portions of the vias may be exposed through the component sidewall to permit circuit test. Other, exemplary thermally matched components, constructed of multi-layer resin or ceramic substrates are also disclosed and wherein external termination pads are concentrated to the center of the component. Alternative, thermally matched transmission lines and resistor network circuits are also disclosed.

    • Multi-layered, thick/thin film, nanosecond delay lines, the inductive/capacitive characteristics of which are tailored to provide line impedances yielding unit delays of 1 to 10 nanoseconds. The delay lines are constructed on a supporting ceramic, resin/fiber or plastic substrate. In alternative embodiments, a serpentine conductive layer of tailored line widths and conductor spacings is sandwiched relative to overlying dielectric layers of 25 to 200 microns thickness and associated ground plane layers. In another embodiment, multiple conductor layers are sandwiched relative to intervening dielectric and ground plane layers. Lateral contact pads/pins, vertical vias and jumper conductors permit circuit connection and interconnection of the layers.

    • A vehicle axle includes an axle housing defining a cavity. The axle includes a pair of outer drive shafts, each being coaxially received in a respective housing cavity and slidable therein, each outer drive shaft defining a splined cavity. The axle includes a pair of inner drive shafts, each having a splined end coaxially coupled to a respective outer drive shaft splined cavity such that a respective outer drive shaft is slidably movable therein. A piston is attached to the inner end of each outer drive shaft and separates an inner fluid chamber from an outer fluid chamber. A fluid channel includes opposed ends in communication with respective fluid chambers. A force absorption container is in fluid communication with each fluid channel and includes a compression spring, wherein the spring is compressed when movement of the piston pushes fluid through the channel into the force absorption container.
