[Class 37] A method of manufacturing metal rectifier elements comprises simultaneously applying insulating washers to the surrounds of mounting holes in a coated base-plate or strip. The coated base-plate, suitably masked by paper, has first punched in it the mounting holes for a number of rectifier elements, the mask then being removed. The insulating paper washers and a second mask are then applied, the washers 34 being stacked on rods 33 carried on a plate 32 which is normally forced by springs 29a against the underside of a fixed plate 31a, through which the rods 33 pass.- A vacuum pick-up 31 is lowered by means of a handle 53 and pulley 49, blind holes 45 engaging the tops of rods 33 and pushing them down till plate 44 of the pick-up contacts the top washer on each stack. The pick-up is then' raised, and a slidable plate 27 carrying the coated base-plate, suitably punched and masked, is moved under the pick-up 31 which is lowered and operated by lever 41 to release the washers. The pickup is then raised a second time, the plate 27 moved under a hot press tool which tacks the mask and washers in position. The counterelectrode is then applied and the separate discs punched from the plate. Specifications 526,482 and 561,872 are referred to.

The two leads 5 and 8 have tubular extensions 6 and 9 respectively passing through holes in the base plate 1, a semi-conductor 2, and an insulating layer 3, insulating bushings 10 and 16 respectively surrounding the tubular extensions, of which 6 contacts the base 1 through a washer 7 and 9 contacts counter electrode 4 by means of an extension 12. In a modification, the insulating layer 3 is confined to an area surrounding the -hole through which extension 9 passes.

The rectifiers are connected by cooling and spacing plates 7 dished centrally to contact the counter electrode surfaces over an inactive area, as in Specification 526,482. A metal wire 5 is incorporated in the rod and bracket during moulding. Connecting taps 11 are inserted.

[Class 37] Reverse resistance in a selenium rectifier is increased by electric current passed in the high resistance direction, an individual resistance being connected in series with each rectifier unit under treatment. In the example of apparatus shown, the bases of the discs 14 are pressed firmly into contact with a flat surfaced cooling channel 10 by a series of metal bellows 17 operated by compressed air. Current passes through a connecting apron 20 to the disc and to the return lead constituted by the channel 10. Each apron is connected by a lead 22 with a two-way switch 23 which can put into the circuit one or other of resistances 24, 25 according to the size of the disc. In modifications for discs of smaller size, springs are used to hold the discs against the cooled plate, releasable bv a common operating bar. Specifications 455,773 and 526,482 are referred to.

In the example, for making discs, the centre holes C are formed, then a mushroom-shaped plug D is inserted in each and the whole area sprayed with metal or individual circles G corresponding to the active areas of the discs are sprayed.
