    • This invention comprises a photographic element having a support bearing one or more silver halide emulsions and one or more DIR couplers of structure I or II below: wherein: Z is a moiety which can react with oxidized developer to release a coupling-off group; R1 is a hydrogen atom or a substituent selected from the group consisting of halogen atom, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, alkylthio, arylthio, amino, alkylamino, arylamino, carbonamido, carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, aryloxy, arylcarbonyl, alkylcarbonyl, sulphonyl and sulphonamido groups; each of the R2 substituents is a halogen atom or a substituent selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, alkylthio, arylthio, amino, alkylamino, arylamino, carbonamido, carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, aryloxy, arylcarbonyl, alkylcarbonyl, sulphonyl and sulphonamido groups; X represents the atoms required to make a second ring which is aromatic and contains at least one nitrogen atom; and n is between 0 and the number of carbon atoms in the second ring, with the proviso that if R1 is hydrogen, n is at least 1.

    • The invention relates to a photographic element comprising at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith a heterocyclic magenta or cyan dye-forming coupler of formula (I), wherein HET is a heterocyclic coupler comprising at least two fused rings and having at least one bridgehead nitrogen atom; S is bonded to a position of HET capable of releasing the heterocyclylthio moiety from HET upon reaction with oxidized developer; X is a heteroatom selected from nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, bonded to the carbon atom bearing the exocyclic S and to other ring atoms only; and Z are the atoms necessary to complete an unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic ring or ring system, which may contain one or more other heteroatoms selected from nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur; provided also that the heterocyclylthio moiety released upon reaction with oxidized developer does not significantly inhibit silver development nor cause a bleach acceleration effect. The couplers have good activity and the heterocyclylthio coupling-off groups can comprise or be linked to photographically useful groups, such as dyes, development accelerators or electron transfer agents, thereby providing a practical way of attaching these groups to fused heterocyclic ring systems.

    • Disclosed is a color silver halide photographic element comprising a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer or a non-silver containing light-insensitive layer, said light-sensitive or light-insensitive layer containing a polymer compound comprising a heterocycle unit derived from: (a) a heterocycle monomer (1) comprising two or more annulated rings containing, in total, a minimum of three ring heteroatoms of which no more than two of the heteroatoms are connected in sequence to each other and (2) having a ClogP less than 6.2; or (b) a monocyclic heterocycle monomer having exactly three ring heteroatoms and having a ClogP less than 8.75; with the proviso that the heterocycle unit does not contain a hydroxy or mercapto group (or their tautomeric equivalent), and does not react with oxidized developer; and the amount of the polymer compound in the element being sufficient to increase the photographic speed of the element compared to the same element without the compound.
