    • In a driver circuit of direct drive matrix type LCD panel, a quantity of ON-STATE cells (or OFF-STATE cells) displayed on the just previous scan electrode is counted and a quantity of ON-STATE cells (or OFF-STATE cells) to be displayed on a present scan electrode is also counted. A compensation voltage is generated according to a predetermined relation based on a difference of the two above-counted quantities, and is superposed onto drive voltages of unselected scan electrodes or of each of data electrodes, in a polarity that an undesirable spike voltage induced on unselected cell voltage is cancelled, in synchronization with selection of the present scan electrode. The compensation voltage may be generated according to a digital difference of the two quantities or to a change in an analog voltage representing the counted quantity. The above-described relation of the compensation voltage versus the counted quantity difference may be proportional or may be given with a predetermined specific relation to meet the panel characteristics. The compensation voltage may be a flat voltage during the period for selecting the single scan electrode or may be of a spike waveform. Amplitude of this spike is determined by the above-described predetermined relation. An irregular panel brightness caused from spike voltages induced from data electrode voltage application is cancelled.

    • Disclosed is a liquid-crystal display having the capability of a tablet which offers high image quality and a high response speed. An active matrix type liquid-crystal display having the capability of a tablet comprises: an active matrix type liquid-crystal display composed of a device substrate having a plurality of scan electrodes, a plurality of data electrodes, a plurality of pixel electrodes, and a plurality of switching devices, and an opposed substrate holding a liquid crystal in cooperation with the device substrate; a voltage detector that when brought into contact with a display surface of the liquid-crystal display, detects pulses, which are applied consecutively to the scan electrodes and data electrodes, through electrostatic coupling between the detector and the scan electrodes or between the detector and the data electrodes and that outputs a detected signal; and a position detector for detecting a contact position of the detector on the basis of the detected signal. Herein, the device substrate is situated on the side of the observer of the display. The positions of data electrodes lying in the vicinity of a stylus are detected during a data electrode position detection period defined as a period during which no pulses are applied to scan electrodes. Positions of scan electrodes lying in the vicinity of the stylus are identified by detecting display scanning pulses that are applied consecutively to a plurality of scan electrodes in order to cause the switching devices to conduct consecutively during a display data writing period.

    • An active matrix display device of an improved and simplified configuration and a driving method for the same are disclosed. The display device according to the present invention is characterized in that data bus lines and scan bus lines are separately formed on first and second transparent substrates respectively and the drain electrode of each TFT on the second substrate is connected to the scan bus line to be addressed next. This configuration eliminates earth bus lines of the prior art. This arrangement has effects of simplifying a bus line design and obtaining a higher yield and an increased opening rate for each display element. In order to drive the above device, an address pulse having a stepped waveform is used. Each address pulse has Vgon, Vgc, and Vgoff levels, and a width of two horizontal scan time. The first step of address pulse Vgc corresponds to the address time of the adjacent scan bus line to be scanned previously; and the second step Vgon corresponds to the address time for the TFT to be scanned. The present invention discloses a voltage relation for waveforms of the address pulse and data pulse in order to obtain a high quality display.
