    • Ethylene and other 1-olefins and optionally other non-1-olefins are (co)polymerized in the presence of a catalyst which is a complex of formula I, where the variables are defined as follows: M is an element of Groups 6 to 10 of the Periodic Table of the Elements, Nu1 is O, S or Se; Nu2, Nu3 are each N or P, A1 is N or C—R7 or Si—R7, A2 is N or C—R8 or Si—R8, R1 to R5 are hydrogen, R6 to R9 are selected from the group consisting of (i) hydrogen, (ii) substituted or unsubstituted C1-C8-alkyl, (iii) substituted or unsubstituted C2-C8-alkenyl having from one to 4 isolated or conjugated double bonds, (iv) substituted or unsubstituted C3-C12-cycloalkyl, (v) C7-C13-aralkyl, (vi) C6-C14-aryl that is unsubstituted or monosubstituted or polysubstituted by identical or different substituents selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted C1-C8-alkyl, C3-C12-cycloalkyl, C7-C13-aralkyl, C6-C14-aryl, halogen, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C6-alkoxy, C6-C14-aryloxy, SiR10R11R12 and O—SiR10R11R12; and (vii) five- and six-membered nitrogen-containing heteroaryl radicals, unsubstituted or monosubstituted or polysubstituted by identical or different substituents selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted C1-C8-alkyl, C3-C12-cycloalkyl, C7-C13-aralkyl, C6-C14-aryl, halogen, C1-C6-alkoxy, C6-C14-aryloxy, SiR10R11R12 and O—SiR10R11R12, where adjacent radicals R1 to R9 optionally joined to one another to form a 5- to 12-membered ring; L1 is an uncharged organic or inorganic ligand, L2 is an organic or inorganic anionic ligand, where L1 and L2 may be joined to one another by one or more covalent bonds, and z is an integer from 1 to 3, and where R10 to R12 are identical or different and are selected from among the group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C8-alkyl, C3-C12-cycloalkyl, C7-C13-aralkyl and C6-C14-aryl.

    • An organometallic compound of the formula I where M1 is selected from among Fe, Ru and Os and M2 is selected from among the transition metals of groups IV to VI of the Periodic Table, which can be prepared by reacting an organometallic compound of the formula II with a transition metal compound of the formula III, M2L1L2(L3)x+1  III where the variables are as defined above and the organometallic compound of the formula II can, if desired, be doubly deproteinated beforehand, can be used as part of a catalyst system for the polymerization or copolymerization of olefins. This catalyst system comprises one or more organometallic compounds of the formula I and at least one activator. The compound of the formula I can also be used to produce a solid catalyst comprising at least one organometallic compound of the formula I, at least one activator and a solid support by impregnating a support material with one or more organometallic compounds of the formula I and at least one activator. This solid catalyst can be used in a process for the polymerization or copolymerization of olefins in bulk, in suspension or in the gas phase.
