    • PURPOSE:To reduce considerably the consumption of catalysts and to enable the economical operation of a device by exchanging successively the older catalyst layers with fresh catalysts according to the degree of deterioration over the entire part. CONSTITUTION:If the performance of catalysts as a whole deteriorates, a spare catalyst layer 5b is replenished to restore the catalyst performance. Waste gas 3 is passed through catalyst layers 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a, 5b and is thus treated. After the spare catalyst layers 5a, 5b are fully replenished, a prescribed number among the catalyst layers of the longest period of use, for example, the layer 4a, is exchanged with fresh catalysts at every deterioration of the catalyst performance as a whole down to a required lower limit to restore the catalyst performance, then the waste gas 3 is treated in all the catalyst layers 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a, 5b. Thereafter, the catalyst layers are successively exchanged with fresh catalysts in order of 4b, 4c, 5a, 5b, 4a, 4b... so that the discarding of the catalysts from the ones which are used for the longest time and are thoroughly consumed of catalytic activity is made possible.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled calcined material, having a large surface area and improved strength and heat resistance, and suitable for a catalyst or catalytic carrier, by calcining metatitanic acid in the form of a sol containing one or more compounds selected from a tungsten compound and a molybdenum compound and fine particulate silicic acid.
      CONSTITUTION: Metatitanic acid in the form of a sol containing (A) fine particulate silicic acid and (B) a tungsten compound and/or a molybdenum compound is calcined to prepare a calcined titanium oxide. The calcined titanium oxide remains in the form of ungrown anatase type crystal by the action of the respective compounds contained in the titanium oxide in the calcination. The resultant calcined material has a large surface area, and the mechanical strength and the heat resistance are remarkably improved. The resultant calcined material as a carrier is used to support metallic oxides having the catalytic activity of removing nitrogen oxide. Thus, an excellent catalyst having the activity of removing the nitrogen oxide for a long term by the synergistic action of the metallic oxides, anatase type titanium oxide and the fine prticulate silicic acid and a very low oxidation ratio of SO
      2 into SO
      3 is obtained.

Thus, the aimed calcined material having a large surface area and improved mechanical strength and heat resistance can be obtained. The resultant calcined titanium oxide is used as a carrier for supporting a specific metallic oxide to give an unconventional improved catalyst for removing nitrogen oxide having the synergistic action of the respective oxides in the carrier and the metallic oxide.

The resultant calcined titanium oxide is used as a carrier for supporting the metallic oxide having the catalytic activity of removing the nitrogen oxide to give the improved catalyst having the activity of removing the nitrogen oxide for a long term by the synergistic action of the anatase type titanium oxide and the fine particulate silicic acid and a low oxidation ratio of SO
      2 into SO
      3 .
