    • A device for detecting the presence of an object is provided. The device includes a light source, a current controller coupled to the light source, a sensor and a pattern detection engine. The current controller sets to provide the light source with a drive current having a pattern. The sensor is operable to receive light, notably light reflected from an object at the detection area and subsequently generates a signal in response to the light received. The pattern detection engine receives the signal from the sensor and subsequently reports the presence of the object upon determining the presence of the pattern in the signal. The object detection system is further configured to provide a navigation operation when an object is detected at the detection area.

    • An apparatus including an image sensor is disclosed. The apparatus includes a polarization filter, an image sensor, and a processor connected to the image sensor. The polarization filter is adapted to filter out light polarized in a first direction from a first scene. The image sensor is adapted to capture the filtered light, and the image sensor includes support circuits to convert the captured filtered light to image data. The processor is adapted to process the image data to detect features of the first scene. The polarization filter filters out noise component of the image, thus increasing contrast. In another embodiment, a mosaic polarization filter is used to capture a scene in a first image including light from the scene having first polarity and to capture the scene in a second image including light from the scene having first polarity. The two images can be analyzed to determine various characteristics of the scene.

    • Various embodiments of systems, devices, components and methods of detecting the presence of at least one predetermined object held against a capacitive touchscreen by a user's finger or hand are disclosed. The predetermined object is held or placed against a touchscreen or touch panel, and sensed mutual capacitance signals are routed to a processor. The processor determines whether the sensed signals correspond to the at least one predetermined object on the basis of one or more predetermined ranges of mutual capacitances corresponding to the predetermined object, where the predetermined range of mutual capacitances does not correspond to a user's finger or hand. Other characteristics of the predetermined object may also be determined, such as the object's shape, orientation or electrical resistance.

    • A current output of a drive signal, modulated between two current settings, is applied to a laser diode, e.g. VCSEL. The settings are selected such that laser diode's power output meets the average power and peak power limits of the eye safety standards. The drive signal having a duty cycle toggling between the two settings. The duty cycle is selected such that the average and peak power limits are met for the given upper current setting. The drive circuit may include an analog modulator or digital analog converter (DAC) for maintaining the lower and upper current settings. When the drive circuit is implemented as an integrated circuit, the DAC may be incorporated into the IC. The sensitivity of the DAC is selected to maintain the desired lower and upper current settings.
