    • PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful for coloring cultured fishes, being readily purified, in high yield without admixture of chlorophyll by culturing a bacterium belonging to the genus Alteromonas, capable of producing zeaxanthin in a medium and collecting a product from the culture mixture. CONSTITUTION:A bacterium [e.g. Alteromonas sp. KK10,203C (FERM P-12,434)] belonging to the genus Alteromonas, capable of producing zeaxanthin is inoculated into a seed medium, subjected to shaking culture at 25 deg.C for 48 hours, the prepared seed culture solution is transferred to a culture tank in a ratio of 2%V/V, subjected to aerated spinner culture at 25 deg.C for 120 hours, the culture solution is filtered off to collect cells, which are ground, extracted with acetone, the extracted solution is concentrated, passed through a polystyrene-based adsorbent column, an adsorbed substance is eluted with methanol, concentrated, extracted with benzene and purified by silica gel chromatography and high- performance liquid chromatography to give zeaxanthin in high yield.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain a new carotenoid having high polarity and useful for a color tone improver or a color refreshing agent of fishes and shellfishes, etc., by comprising thermozeaxanthin, thermobiszeaxanthin and thermocryptoxanthin that are produced by a thermophile. CONSTITUTION: This new carotenoid is composed of a thermozeaxanthin of formula I (R1 is an acyl), a thermobiszeaxanthin of formula II (R2 and R3 are each an acyl) and a thermocryptoxanthin of formula III and useful for a color tone improver or a color refreshing agent of culture fishes and shellfishes or an additive to foods. This new carotenoid is obtained by planting Thermus thermophilus ATCC 27634 as a thermophile into a medium, shake-culturing at 70 deg.C for 24hr, collecting fungus bodies by centrifuging the cultured solution, extracting by adding acetone to the resultant solution, concentrating the resultant extracted solution, separating ethyl acetate fraction by adding water and ethyl acetate to the concentrated solution, concentrating.exsiccating and fractionating the exsiccated substance by a column chromatography.

    • PURPOSE:To provide an antifouling agent having high safety and excellent antifouling effect and effective for preventing the adhesion and proliferation of harmful aquatic life such as shell and alga to the bottom of a ship, a facility in seawater, a construction in water, an inlet channel for cooling water, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective antifouling agent contains a ubiquinone compound of formula I (R is H, 1-20C straight-chain alkyl or group of formula II; (n) is integer of 1-12) as an active component. Since the active component of the antifouling agent is a highly biodegradable compound originated from natural source, it has high safety to human body as well as environment. It does not kill the periphyton but inhibits the adhesion of the life and has excellent repelling effect on harmful aquatic adhesive life and high safety to fish and shellfish. The active component may be used singly or in combination with other antifouling agent. For example, the antifouling agent is a chemically synthesized compound, an extract of animal, bacteria, etc., containing the above compound or pure substance separated from the extract. The amount of the active component is preferably 5-20wt.% for paint based on the film-forming agent, 5-20wt.% for solution and 1-20wt.% for emulsion, respectively.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new carotenoid sulfate, soluble in a water-soluble solvent and useful as a color tone improving agent and a redyeing agent for cultured fishes and shellfishes, a food additive, etc., by culturing a microorganism of the genus Flavobacterium having the productivity of a new carotenoid sulfate. SOLUTION: This new carotenoid sulfate is represented by formula I (M is H or a monovalent metal) and formula II (M is H or a monovalent metal) and is useful as a color tone improving agent and a redyeing agent for fishes and shellfishes, a food additive, etc., soluble in a water-soluble solvent. The new highly polar carotenoid is obtained by inoculating a microorganism, belonging to the genus Flavobacterium and having the ability to produce the new carotenoid sulfate [e.g. Flavobacterium PC-6 strain (FERM P-15183)] into a culture medium, separating the microbial cell from the cultured solution, extracting and purifying the resultant product as nostoxanthin-3-sulfate represented by formula I and 4-ketonostoxanthin-3'-sulfate represented by formula II.
