It does not kill the periphyton but inhibits the adhesion of the life and has excellent repelling effect on harmful aquatic adhesive life and high safety to fish and shellfish.

    • PURPOSE:To provide an antifouling agent having high safety and excellent antifouling effect and effective for preventing the adhesion and proliferation of harmful aquatic life such as shell and alga to the bottom of a ship, a facility in seawater, a construction in water, an inlet channel for cooling water, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective antifouling agent contains a straight-chain saturated monocarboxylic acid expressed by formula CH3(CH2)n COOH ((n) is integer of 2-16) as an active component. Since the active component of the antifouling agent is a compound originated from natural source and frequently found as a food component, it has high safety to human body as well as environment. It does not kill the periphyton but exclusively inhibits the adhesive function of the life and has high safety to fish and shellfish. The active component may be used singly or in combination with other antifouling agent. For example, the antifouling agent is a chemically synthesized compound, an extract of natural oil and fat or algae containing the above compound, their hydrolyzate or pure substance separated from the extract. The amount of the active component is preferably 2-30wt.% for paint based on the film-forming agent, 5-20wt.% for solution based on the solution and 2-30wt.% for emulsion, respectively.

The antifouling agent does not kill the adhesive organisms but inhibits only the adhesive function of the organism. It has excellent repelling effect on harmful aquatic adhesive organisms and high safety to fish and shellfish. Since 2-hydroxymonocarboxylic acid used as the active component is present e.g. as a constituent component of natural sphingolipid, it can easily be obtained by extraction, etc.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain an antifouling agent, comprising a specific carotenoid compound as an active ingredient, having high safety, capable of exhibiting excellent antifouling effects, useful for ship bottoms, fishing nets, buoys, intake channels, etc., for cooling water and preventing marine organisms from attaching and propagating. CONSTITUTION:The antifouling agent for underwater noxious attaching organisms comprises one or more carotenoid compounds selected from those of formulas I and II (either of R1 and R2 is H and the other is methyl; either of R3 and R4 is H and the other is methyl) as an active ingredient. This antifouling agent is capable of inhibiting only the attaching function of the underwater noxious attaching organisms without killing the attaching organisms. The carotenoid compounds of formulas I and II each can be used alone as the active ingredient of the antifouling agent or two or more thereof can be mixed for use. Furthermore, although the carotenoid compounds can chemically be synthesized, an extract from naturally occurring animals, plants, bacteria, etc., containing the carotenoid compounds can directly be utilized or suitably purified for use.

Since the active component of the antifouling agent is a compound quickly decomposable in natural environment and originated from natural source, it has high safety to human body as well as environment. It does not kill but inhibits the adhesion of the life and has excellent perphyton repelling effect on harmful aquatic adhesive life and high safety to fish and shellfish. The active component can be used in the form of paint, solution, emulsion, etc., and the amount of the active component is preferably 5-30wt.% of the film- forming agent, 5-30wt.% of the solution and 2-30wt.% of the emulsion, respectively.
