    • To improve semiconductor-based systems for generating white light, a phosphor is integrated with an external structure, such as a reflector. A disclosed exemplary system, for illumination applications, utilizes one or more semiconductor devices for emitting radiant energy of a first wavelength. A reflector outside the package of the LED or other semiconductor device has a reflective surface arranged to receive radiant energy from the energy source. At least some of the received radiant energy of the first wavelength excites one or more phosphors associated with an external light processing element, for example, located along the surface of the reflector, to emit light, including visible light energy of at least one second wavelength different from the first wavelength. In the examples, at least some of visible light emitted by the phosphor is reflected by the reflective surface of the reflector and directed to facilitate the particular humanly perceptible luminance or illumination application.

    • Constructive occlusion type lighting systems utilize a reflective mask to cover a portion of an active optical surface, typically a Lambertian surface formed by the aperture of a diffusely reflective cavity, in order to distribute radiant energy with a tailored intensity distribution. Adjustment of the parameters of the constructive occlusion system enables the system designer to tailor the system performance to a wide range of applications. As disclosed herein, the constructive occlusion type distribution is combined with a diffuse distribution of a transmissive component, emitted through a wall of the system. For example, a diffusely reflective wall of the cavity may also be partially transmissive, to allow some energy to pass through and provide an additional illumination component, while continuing to maintain the characteristics to support the constructive occlusion component.

Also upon the connection of the connector to the connector-switch, an auxiliary control system coupled to the connector is coupled through the connector and connector-switch to the traffic signal. After being connected, the auxiliary control system assumes control of the time of operation of the traffic signal.
