    • A timing belt tensioner for a motor vehicle engine comprising a pivot that is fixed relative to the motor vehicle engine. A tensioner arm is mounted for pivotal movement on the pivot. The tensioner arm has a friction surface disposed in friction sliding relation with an adjacent surface during the pivotal movement. A belt engaging pulley is mounted for rotation on the tensioner arm. A spring coupled with the tensioner arm biases the arm in a direction tending to force the pulley into tensioning engagement with the belt when the tensioner is installed on the motor vehicle engine. The spring biasing the arm into a working position maintains a predetermined range of tension in the belt during dynamic operating equilibrium of the belt. An anti-kickback stop mechanism is coupled with the arm and stops instantaneous kickback movement of the arm against the belt tensioning direction beyond when the arm is instantaneously moved away from the working position against the belt-tensioning direction in response to instantaneous tightening of the belt. The anti-kickback mechanism adjusts a location of the stop position based upon the working position of the arm.

    • A tensioner for tensioning a flexible drive means, such as a timing belt or chain, includes a pulley to contact the belt. The pulley is mounted on a tensioner arm and the tensioner arm can be rotated about a pivot shaft mounted to the tensioner by a spring. The axis about which the pulley rotates is spaced from the axis of the rotation of the tensioner arm with respect to the pivot shaft and the spacing of these axes of rotation results in the pulley moving through an eccentric towards or away from the belt when the tensioner arm is rotated. A stop is used to limit the range of movement of the tensioner arm between a desired range of movement defined by a free arm stop and a backstop. The position of the stop is adjustable by an installer. The angular range of movement of the tensioner arm is adjustable from a position suitable for installation of the tensioner to a position suitable for operation of the installed tensioner. In one embodiment, the movement of the stop from the installation position to the nominal operating position also compensates the spring.

    • A tensioner for tensioning engine driven driving elements, such as belts or chains, is disclosed. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the tensioner is initially installed with the pivot structure spaced past the perpendicular angular position thereof. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, the tension required to move the pivot structure to the end of its range of angular positions is at least 75% more than at the hot engine angular position thereof. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, the tensioner has a stop at the maximum travel position thereof and the tension required to move the pivot structure to its maximum travel position is at least 75% more than at the hot engine angular position thereof. In accordance with a still further aspect of the invention, the tension required to move the pivot structure to a potential tooth skip angular position is greater than the maximum tension the engine is capable of creating.

    • A tensioner has a base plate and a pivot arm. A first end of the pivot arm is pivotally mounted to the base plate for rotation about a first axis. A spring biases the pivot arm to rotate in a tensioning direction. A push rod assembly is pivotally mounted to the second end of the pivot arm. The push rod assembly is rotatable about a second axis extending parallel to the first axis. The push rod assembly frictionally engages the pivot arm generating frictional forces counter acting and damping the spring bias. When the tensioning guide is forced to rotate in the tensioning direction, the acting moment arm of the push rod force causing the guide to rotate towards the endless drive, is considerable longer at the end of the tensioning stroke than in the beginning of the stroke.

    • A tensioner enables easy and reliable reinstallation of the tensioner and belt in the field service while simultaneously making it possible to utilize a one-way clutch device to ensure continuous belt tension control without cumbersome manual alignment and/or realignment procedures. The tensioner has a pivot shaft configured for mounting on an engine surface. A tensioner arm is mounted on the pivot shaft for pivotal movement between a free arm stop position and premount stop position. A belt-engaging pulley is mounted for rotation on the tensioner arm. A base cup is rotatably mounted around an end of the pivot shaft. The base cup has an arcuate slot having a free arm stop end and a premount stop end. The tensioner arm cooperates with the arcuate slot limiting the pivotal movement of the tensioner arm. A spring is coupled between the tensioner arm and the base cup biasing the tensioner arm in a belt-tensioning direction. An anti-kickback stop mechanism engages the pivot shaft and has a lost motion connection with the tensioner arm wherein the tensioner arm moves through a free range without engaging the anti-kickback mechanism. The tensioner arm 1) rotates the anti-kickback mechanism as the tensioner arm moves beyond the free range towards the premount stop position and 2) enables the anti-kickback mechanism as the tensioner arm moves beyond the free range towards the free arm stop position, limiting travel of the tensioner arm therebeyond. The spring is fixable relative to the pivot shaft upon the tensioner being mounted on the engine surface.
