    • A vehicle has a rotary magnetic field member which is rotatably supported at a position near the surface of a roadway along which the vehicle runs and rotatingly driven by a driving device. The rotary magnetic field member has magnetic poles of different polarities alternately arranged around its circumference. The vehicle also has an electrical power collector for receiving electrical power from an electrical power supply associated with the roadway. The received electrical power is supplied under the control of a controller to the driving device thereby rotatably driving the rotary magnetic field member. The rotary magnetic field member when rotated relative to the roadway made of an electrically conductive non-magnetic material, forms a varying magnetic field in cooperation with the roadway, thereby generating propulsion force for propelling the vehicle and force for suspending the vehicle, so that the vehicle is propelled in a floating state. It is therefore possible to reduce friction between wheels of the vehicle and the roadway and, hence, to suppress wear of the wheels. In a high-speed transportation system of the invention, the electrical power collector picks up electrical power from the electrical power supply and the rotary magnetic field member is rotatingly driven by the power picked up by the electrical power collector.

    • An apparatus for controlling an automatic transmission of an automobile and a method therefor utilize a route guidance system. The apparatus includes a memory which stores road information, a detector for detecting a specific position which is located on a planned driving route from the road information stored in the memory; a position detector for detecting the present position of the automobile; a speed detector for detecting the speed V of the automobile; a sensor for detecting an opening degree .theta. of a throttle of the automobile; a computer for computing a distance "d" between the detected automobile position and the detected specific position; a driving operation detector for detecting an operation by the driver of the automobile; a first gear ratio selecting device for selecting a first gear ratio for the automatic transmission based on the detected speed V and the detected throttle opening degree .theta.; and a second gear ratio selecting device for selecting a second gear ratio based on the detected speed V, the distance "d", the detected operation by the driver and the first gear ratio selected by the first gear ratio selecting device. As a result, it is possible to carry out gear change control taking anticipated changes in the driving conditions into account, thus enabling smooth and comfortable driving. Further, since the driver of the automobile can have advance voice notice of control operations, it is possible to avoid confusion caused by sudden unexpected changes.

    • A driving force controller for an electric motor vehicle which suppresses changes in behavior of a vehicle when a right or left driving wheel experiences trouble and detects vehicle conditions to independently control the driving force of each wheel so as not to deviate from a predetermined range. The driving force controller computes a driving force for each wheel in accordance to a demand value for driving force and a detected vehicle traveling condition to drive each wheel independently by electric motors. Motor drivers control the motors so that each motor generates power corresponding to the value of driving force computed therefor. A driving demand detector detects the value of driving force demanded for the vehicle and a vehicle condition detector detects a traveling condition of the vehicle. Wheel driving condition detectors detect conditions at the wheels. A computer computes the values of driving force to be provided at each wheel in accordance with the value of driving force demanded and the detected vehicle traveling conditions and corrects the values computed for individual wheel driving forces when a vehicle traveling condition or a wheel driving condition exceeds a predetermined range.
