    • PURPOSE:To prevent force applied to a solid electrolyte tube even if thermal deformation is caused when a temperature of a positive electrode structure body is lowered as well as to avoid breakage of the electrolyte tube by setting a ratio of linear expansion coefficients in a radial direction and a circumferential direction of the positive electrode structure body in a battery three times or larger than that. CONSTITUTION:A sodium - sulfur battery is composed of a negative electrode active material 1 composed of fused sodium, a solid electrolyte tube 2 composed of beta''-alumina to surround this and a positive electrode structure body 3 composed of carbon fiber felt being an electrical conductive body 7 and sulfur 8 being a positive electrode active material. In this constitution, assuming that a linear expansion coefficient K of felt turning in a radial direction and a circumferential direction in the structure body 3 is set in (K=3) or (K>3), the fact that linear expansion coefficients of the structure body 3 and the electrolyte tube 2 become the same speed when (K=3) is realized and the linear expansion coefficients become mutually separating speed when (K>3) is realized, can be proved. Thereby, the K is set in (K=3) or (K>3), and the sulfur 8 is melted when a battery temperature is raised, and a compressive condition of the felt is released, and the sulfur 8 is solidified when it is lowered, and the structure body 3 is contracted while increasing strength.
