Viewer eyeglasses (10) worn by a viewer comprises a second quarter wavelength plate (11), a right-eye polarizing plate (12), and a left-eye polarizing plate (13) all formed sequentially in order of mention from the side of the display body (1). The direction of polarization of the right-eye polarizing plate (12) is perpendicular to that of the left-eye polarizing plate (13). The right-eye polarizing plate (12) is rotatable by a rotating mechanism (14). With such a single device constitution, normal image display, secret image display, and stereoscopic image display are realized.

摘要： A liquid crystal display configured by stacking a plurality of liquid crystal panels displays an image by controlling the light transmittance with application of a voltage to each of the liquid crystal panels. While a voltage is being applied to the liquid crystal of one liquid crystal panel, the voltage applied to the liquid crystal of the other liquid crystal panels is a non-display voltage. No images are displayed simultaneously on two or more stacked liquid crystal panels. In a liquid crystal panel to which no voltage is applied not to display any image, the longitudinal direction of liquid crystal molecules either is parallel to the direction of the polarizing axis of a polarizing plate or is orthogonal to the polarizing axis, which has no influence on the overall birefringence. Therefore, the overall voltage-to-transmitted light intensity characteristic is the sum of the voltage-to-transmitted light intensity characteristics of all the liquid crystal panels.

摘要： In a predetermined period (one frame or one subframe), a backlight is lighted between the middle point in time in first data writing scanning and the middle point in time in second data writing scanning for each lighting region provided by dividing the backlight into four regions. When the time required for data writing scanning is set equal to 50% of the predetermined period, the ratio (panel on rate) of the time when a liquid crystal panel is in transmitting state to the time the backlight is lighted is as high as 93.8%. The ratio of luminance gradient (luminance in the center of display area/luminance at the end of display area) is as low as 1.14. When the backlight is lighted while being divided into ten regions, the panel on rate can be increased as high as 97.5% and the luminance gradient can be decreased as low as 1.05.

A gate selection period (voltage application period to the ferroelectric liquid crystal) t2 before stopping the voltage application is set longer than a gate selection period (voltage application period to the ferroelectric liquid crystal) t1 in the normal display. Increasing the voltage application period to the ferroelectric liquid crystal provides a sufficient response of the liquid crystal during the gate selection period, thereby realizing high memory ability.
