摘要： PURPOSE:To realize a wide visual field angle and a paper white background display by using liquid crystals having a twist grain boundary(TGB) structure. CONSTITUTION:Grain boundaries 2 exist at every distance Lb between spiral turns in a certain direction (transverse direction) parallel with a liquid crystal layer of the twist grain boundary phase crystals. The orientation directions of the major axes of liquid crystal molecules deviate slightly in the specified direction with the grain boundaries 2 as bordering. In such a case, the directions deviate by an angle 2pia. The spiral structure resembled to the cholesteric phase with the transverse direction as a spiral axis is formed in such a manner. The mechanism to scatter light in the orientation direction of the liquid crystals in a bulk state is needed to exist in order to apply the TGB phases having such structure to a scattering type LCD. The refractive index is changed in periods nearly the same as the wavelengths of visible light within the TGB phase liquid crystals of the spiral structure. Scattering is, therefore, generated in the incident light on the TGB phase liquid crystals.

The angle theta is set within ranges 20-70 deg., and it is set corresponding to the transmissivity and pitch of the louver 27, etc. In such a case, the louver 27 is colored corresponding to applications, and for example, when black-and-white display is performed, the display with high contrast ratio can be performed by arranging black and white on the louver 27 alternately, and transmitting and scattering it. Also, it is not required to provide the louver part 24 in the liquid crystal panel 22, which provides high manufacturing capability and a low cost.
