    • A power management system for a mobile unit wherein the mobile unit detects the quality of the signals received from the base station. Based on this signal quality, the mobile unit determines if the voice data could be adequately transmitted using a secondary speech coder. If the transmission quality is adequate, the mobile unit switches from a primary speech coder to a secondary speech coder. The secondary speech coder is compatible with the primary speech coder, but consumes significantly less battery power when coding and decoding the voice data. The mobile unit may alternatively monitor the amount of processor usage. If the processor usage exceeds a threshold level, the mobile unit switches from the primary speech coder to the secondary speech coder.

    • A transmission arrangement is disclosed which facilitates compression of modem modulated facsimile signals for transmission on digital facilities. The presence of a facsimile call is detected and facsimile control messages are obtained by demodulating and interpreting the facsimile call control protocol. A controller is responsive to the obtained control messages for controlling a voiceband encoder to encode the control portion of the facsimile call and for controlling a so-called facsimile page demodulator to demodulate any facsimile page portions of the facsimile call to obtain a baseband digital bit stream. The encoded control portion of the facsimile call and the baseband digital bit stream representative of the demodulated, i.e., compressed, facsimile page portion of the facsimile call are transmitted along with control information (as side information) to a receiver. At the receiver, a replica of the original modem modulated facsimile signal is reconstructed in response to the control information and by decoding the control portion of the facsimile call and by remodulating the digital bit stream representative of the facsimile page portion of the facsimile call.

The apparatus may include a first switch to route diagnostic information or acoustic information received from a processor of the device, a codec coupled to the first switch to code the routed diagnostic information or acoustic information, and a second switch coupled to the codec to route the coded diagnostic information to a first port of the wireless device and to route the coded acoustic information to the first port or a second port of the wireless device.
