    • The present invention relates to methods for the detection of myelin and a quantitative measurement of its local concentration in a sample using a benzofuran compound or its radioisotope derivatives. In one embodiment a method of myelin detection comprises identifying a subject at risk of or diagnosed with a myelin-associated neuropathy, parenterally administering to the subject the benzofuran compound, or a derivative of the compound, and determining myelination in the subject by detecting binding in the sample. In one embodiment, the invention provides a method of imaging myelinated tissue in a surgical field of mammalian tissue comprising the steps of contacting the surgical site with the benzofuran compound or a radioisotope derivative of the compound, and detecting binding in the surgical site. In yet another embodiment, a method of imaging spinal cord and spinal nerve root tissue is provided comprising the steps of parenteral administration of a radioisotope derivative of the benzofuran compound and detecting the radioisotope derivative within the spinal canal and intervertebral foramen. Methods of quantification of binding of the benzofuran compound or its derivatives are also provided.

    • The invention relates to imaging methods and systems. The systems may comprise a white light source configured to generate light in a first wavelength range, an excitation source configured to generate light at one or more wavelengths for exciting a fluorescent substance, a first detector configured to acquire reflectance image data that represents white light reflected from a subject, and a second detector configured to acquire fluorescence image data that represents fluorescence emissions from the subject. At least one of the one or more wavelengths generated by the excitation light source is within the first wavelength range of the white light source. The fluorescent substance may be, for example, a fluorescent dye that is injected into a patient before or during a surgery. The system may also include an image processing engine and a display. The image processing engine may receive the reflectance image data and the fluorescence image data and generate a merged image in which the fluorescence image data is superimposed on the reflectance image data. The display may be used by a surgeon, for example, to more effectively visualize the surgical site during surgery.

    • A system provides a multi-axis translation and orientation capability for optical imaging. The system includes an optical imaging apparatus providing a signal representing a digitized image, and a mechanical frame. The frame includes a first set of articulations capable of independently translating the optical imaging apparatus in multiple linear directions. The system also includes a second set of articulations formed as joints providing at least three independent degrees of rotation of the optical imaging apparatus. The system also provides an opening configured to permit the frame to be postured about a patient such that an isocenter corresponds to a region of interest of the patient, and includes an illumination source attached to the frame and configured to direct illumination towards the isocenter. The system also comprises a camera system co-located with the illumination source and having a focal plane at the isocenter.
