    • According to one aspect of the invention, a method of creating a dilution series is provided. The method may include providing a first vessel including a sample, and aspirating at least a portion of the sample from the first vessel into a first conduit primed with solvent such that the sample disperses in the solvent. At least a portion of the dispersed sample is dispensed into a second vessel while, substantially simultaneously, a solvent is dispensed into the second vessel from a second conduit. Alternatively, the second vessel may already contain the solvent and the first conduit may dispense the dispersed sample into the second vessel containing the solvent. According to one aspect of the invention, a system for creating a dilution series is provided. The system may include a first conduit configured to aspirate and dispense a sample to be diluted and a second conduit configured to dispense a solvent. First and second pressure sources may be provided to move fluid through the respective first and second conduits. The system may also include a controller configured to instruct the first and second pressure sources to dispense an aspirated sample and solvent at substantially the same time.

    • An optical to electrical converter is to receive an incoming optical data communications signal. A binary to ternary encoder has an input coupled to an output of the converter. A ternary to binary decoder has first and second limiting amplifiers, each having a pair of complementary inputs. One of the inputs of each pair is coupled to a first adjustable threshold circuit and the other is coupled to an output of the encoder. A logical summing circuit has a pair of inputs coupled to outputs of the first and second limiting amplifiers, respectively. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

    • In one embodiment, an apparatus for a high data-rate optical modulator bias circuit is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an optical modulator, a voltage-controlled voltage source to translate a control voltage into a voltage referenced to a voltage supply to the optical modulator, a buffer amplifier with high current sinking capability to supply a bias voltage to the optical modulator, and a bias-T to couple the bias voltage to a data port of the optical modulator. Other embodiments are also described.

    • An apparatus for optical receiver circuit protection includes a bias source, a bias monitor, and a comparator. The bias source is to provide a bias voltage to an optical receiver. The bias monitor is coupled to measure a current through the optical receiver, where the current changes responsive to received optical energy. A comparator is coupled to the bias monitor, where the comparator has a first state if the current is less than a threshold current level and where the comparator has a second state if the current is greater than the threshold current level. The bias source is coupled to be enabled responsive to the comparator switching to the first state and disabled responsive to the comparator switching to the second state.
