    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide varnish for forming a liquid crystal alignment layer with which an alignment layer having mechanical strength coping with friction resulting from rubbing and being excellent in adhesion to a glass substrate is formed and which is also excellent in preservation stability. SOLUTION: The varnish for forming the liquid crystal alignment layer contains a polymer which is obtained by using a silsesquioxane derivative represented by formula (1) and in which the polymerization chain is formed of at least one out of an amide bond and an imide bond. In formula (1), R 1 is a substituent selected from a hydrogen, an alkyl, an aryl and an arylalkyl, at least two of Ys are substituents selected from either of a group of substituents represented by formula (2-1) and a group of substituents represented by formula (2-2) and remaining Ys are hydrogens. In formulas (2-1) and (2-2), Z 1 is a substituent having an amino group, Z 2 is a substituent having a 2-oxapropanedioyl group and R 2 is a substituent defined as is the case with R 1 .
