    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which meets at least one of or has an appropriate balance of at least two of characteristics such as the high upper-limit temperature of a nematic phase, the low lower-limit temperature of the nematic phase, low viscosity, appropriate optical anisotropy, negatively large dielectric anisotropy, large specific resistance, high stability for ultraviolet light, and high stability for heat; and to also provide an AM element having, e.g., short response time, a large voltage retention, a large contrast ratio, and a long life.
      SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a bicyclic compound as a first component having a negatively large dielectric anisotropy and fluorine on at least three lateral positions, a specific bicyclic compound as a second component having a small viscosity, a specific compound as a third component having a high upper-limit temperature, and a specific compound as a fourth component having negatively large dielectric anisotropy, and has negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid crystal display element contains the composition.

      SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a compound having tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl with large negative dielectric constant anisotropy as a first component, 20 wt.% or more of a particular bicyclic compound having low viscosity as a second component, a particular compound having a high upper limit temperature as a third component, and a particular compound having negative large dielectric constant anisotropy as a forth component, and has negative dielectric anisotropy; and the liquid crystal display element contains this composition.
