    • A thick-walled, seamless, rigid non-porous conduit (Y) having a substantially uniform wall thikkness which is not less than about 0.5 percent of the outside diameter consisting essentially of an oriented crystalline thermoplastic polymer characterized by a structure comprised of radially compressed discrete, platelet-like spherulitic crystalline aggregates (A!) and having a combination of good ultimate tensile strength and low temperature tensile impact strength. The conduit is fabricated by solid state hydrostatic extrusion of a substantially non-oriented semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer preform (X) which may contain up to about60 weight percent filler. The polymer is substantially simultaneously elongated in both circumferential and axial directions by compressive forces with the circumferential elongation being at least 100 percent. The apparatus used to produce the product is a hydrostatic extrusion press which includes an annular orifice in which the thermoplastic polymer is elongated substantially simultaneously circumferentially and axially with the circumferential elongation being at least 100 percent. Means for maintaining the rigidity of tooling and the hydrostatic extrusion fluid pressure while providing a film of the fluid on the preform for lubricity are provided in the apparatus. A sheet (F) substantially uniform in thickness and having substantially the microstructure and properties of the conduit and excellent drawability may be made from the conduit by slitting and heat deformation. Articles of manufacture may be made by solid state deformation processing of the conduit or the sheet, such as vacuum drawing.

    • Il est decrit un tuyau rigide, a parois epaisses, sans couture (Y) ayant substantiellement une epaisseur de paroi uniforme qui n'a pas moins d'environ 0,5% du diametre externe comprenant essentiellement un polymere thermoplastique cristallin, oriente caracterise par une structure comprenant des agregats cristallins spherolytiques, discrets, radialement comprimes, du type plaquettes et possedant une bonne resistance a la traction et une resistance a la deformation a basse temperature. Le tuyau est prepare par extrusion hydrostatique sensiblement non oriente et semi-cristallin (X) qui peut renfermer jusqu'a au moins 60% de remplissage. Le polymere est sensiblement allonge simultanement a la fois en direction circonferentielle et axiale par des forces de compression, l'elongation circonferentielle etant d'au moins 100%. L'appareillage utilise pour produire ce produit est une presse a extrusion hydrostatique qui comprend un orifice annulaire dans lequel le polymere thermoplastique est allonge sensiblement circonferentiellement et axialement avec un allongement circonferentiel d'environ 100%. Des moyens sont fournis a l'appareillage pour maintenir la rigidite de l'outillage et la pression du fluide d'extrusion hydrostatique, tout en fournissant un film de fluide sur la pre-forme pour la lubrification. Une plaque (F) d'epaisseur sensiblement uniforme et possedant sensiblement la microstructure et les proprietes de tuyau et une excellente deformabilite au tirage peut etre obtenue a partir du tuyau par refente et deformation a chaud. Des articles manufactures peuvent etre obtenus par des processus de deformation a l'etat solide du tuyau ou de la plaque, tels que l'etirage sous vide.

    • A method of making metal fiber reinforced plastic composite from a mixture of ferrous fibers and sacrificial metal fibers. The sacrificial metal fibers may be ferrous fibers coated with a sacrificial metal or may be composed throughout of a sacrificial metal such as zinc having a greater electro negativity than iron. The fibers may also comprise ferrous fibers coated with a sacrificial metal mixed with solid sacrificial metal fibers. The ferrous and sacrificial metal fibers are cut into fairly short lengths and are then blended thoroughly together in predetermined ratios with plastic powder in suitable blenders to form a uniform mix having the sacrificial metal fibers thoroughly dispersed throughout the ferrous metal fibers and the plastic. The blend of metal fibers and plastic is then placed in a mold or other plastic forming apparatus and molded into a desired shape. The final molded plastic composite is corrosion resistant on cut surfaces due to the presence of the sacrificial metal fibers within a distance of the ferrous fibers effective to form galvanic corrosion couples between the ferrous and sacrificial metal fibers.
