    • The manufacture of material webs of foamed plastics generally takes place by extrusion of the material in tubular form, whereupon the material whilst it is still in soft condition is calibrated, that is to say expanded by means of a mandrel, so that the desired tube diameter and thus the desired material thickness is obtained. The material tube is then cooled and cut up axially and laid flat to a web. This manufacturing procedure gives a final product with uneven surface, since the pores and craters which the material surface presents will be enlarged when the tube is expanded. Moreover, the cooling as well as the contact pressure of the material against the mandrel will be varying, which further increases the uneveness of the surface and gives the material an uneven quality. A more uniform material surface and a more homogeneous material tube is obtained in accordance with the invention, in that the material tube (3) after extrusion is pressed, by means of compressed air introduced into the tube, against an outer calibration element (5) and is cooled at the same time, so that its temperature drops below the softening temperature of the material. In this way the cooling as well as the contact pressure can be controlled, and by imparting moreover a profiled surface to the outer calibrating element, a rational manufacture of a material web of foamed thermoplastics of good quality and uniform surface is made possible.

    • A thick-walled, seamless, rigid non-porous conduit (Y) having a substantially uniform wall thikkness which is not less than about 0.5 percent of the outside diameter consisting essentially of an oriented crystalline thermoplastic polymer characterized by a structure comprised of radially compressed discrete, platelet-like spherulitic crystalline aggregates (A!) and having a combination of good ultimate tensile strength and low temperature tensile impact strength. The conduit is fabricated by solid state hydrostatic extrusion of a substantially non-oriented semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer preform (X) which may contain up to about60 weight percent filler. The polymer is substantially simultaneously elongated in both circumferential and axial directions by compressive forces with the circumferential elongation being at least 100 percent. The apparatus used to produce the product is a hydrostatic extrusion press which includes an annular orifice in which the thermoplastic polymer is elongated substantially simultaneously circumferentially and axially with the circumferential elongation being at least 100 percent. Means for maintaining the rigidity of tooling and the hydrostatic extrusion fluid pressure while providing a film of the fluid on the preform for lubricity are provided in the apparatus. A sheet (F) substantially uniform in thickness and having substantially the microstructure and properties of the conduit and excellent drawability may be made from the conduit by slitting and heat deformation. Articles of manufacture may be made by solid state deformation processing of the conduit or the sheet, such as vacuum drawing.
