    • A control system for a subsurface safety valve addresses normal open and closed operation and a failsafe operation if key system components fail. It features a single control line (20) from the surface that splits at the subsurface safety valve and goes to one end of two discrete piston chambers (64, 46) that are aligned and isolated from tubing pressure. The piston (36) in one chamber is larger than in the other and the pistons (36, 52) are connected for tandem movement. Each side of the unbalanced system's piston has a seal mounted to it (38, 54) and another for the rod (40, 56) attached to it that exits the chamber. A jumper line (68) connects the chambers (48,62) at a point between the seals in each chamber and features a large reservoir (70). The jumper line (68) is filled with a compressible fluid. Fail safe closure of the valve occurs if any of the four seals fail.

    • A backup stem seal for a gate valve retains pressure in the body when the valve is in the closed position. The backup seal is secondary to the main stem seal assembly (20) in the bonnet (12). It features metal-to-metal contact between surfaces (22, 24) that are radially oriented or sloping and further can contain a retaining groove (26) for a seal ring (32) in one or both the opposed metal-to-metal surfaces (22, 24). The groove (26) can be formed to better retain the ring (32) from damage from flowing fluids when the valve is open. A passage through the bonnet (34) may be used to test for leakage past such seal. The backup seal allows maintenance of the main stem seal (20) without removing the valve from service.

    • A control system can be used with a single control line (10) to a subsurface safety valve. The operating piston ( 16 ) is exposed to the flow tube (32 ) between two blocks with near identical seals (42, 26) to make the piston insensitive to tubing pressure. A control system seal (18) is carried by the piston in the upper block and a passage (4 ) between the control system seal and the tubing pressure seal in the upper block communicates to a compressible fluid reservoir (38 ) in the lower block that is also isolated from tubing pressure by a tubing pressure seal. Movement of the piston compresses the fluid in the reservoir. The reservoir can also include a spring (52 ) to return the piston and the flow tube to a position to close the valve. A redundant system ( 56 ) can be actuated if the primary system fails.
