    • 18,147. Greene, W. H. Aug. 18. Annular-chamber type of steam engines, applicable for use as gas, oil, explosive vapour, or hydraulic engines. A multiple-expansion engine has a casing A, Fig. 1, containing the first two working-cham- bers a, b, and a similar casing A' containing two more working-chambers. A common shaft G passes through the casings, and has discs F carry- ing piston drums E. As shown in Fig. 2, each piston drum has two sliding piston-vanes C fitted with spring-pressed packing-strips S and having their inner ends formed as racks H. These racks engage with toothed wheels J connected by idle racks I and mounted on shafts K, which are common to adjoining chambers so, that all the piston-vanes move simultaneously, although they are spaced round the main shaft, so as to produce a uniform torque. The abutments L have dupli- cate admission ports l, controlled by suitable valve gear, so that the engine can be reversed. The piston-vanes are actuated by external toothed wheels O, Fig. 6, on the shafts K gearing with friction wheels M, which are periodically rocked by friction blocks N on the casing. The actuating- mechanism may be modified, as by using a tappet device to rock the shafts. The engine may be modified by varying the number and arrangement of the working-chambers and piston-vanes ; for example, alternately-acting vanes may be arranged in one working-chamber.

[Class 103 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] A collision braking - device for a mechanically-propelled vehicle comprises a pneumatic bumper consisting of an inner expandable tube and an outer non-expandible casing B having an aperture C, Fig. 3, through which the inner tube protrudes, the protruding part D normally being engaged by one end of a spring-pressed member E, the other end of which is spaced slightly from a contact member forming part of an electric circuit so that when the bumper is struck the protruding part D is expanded and forces the member F to close the circuit, thus operating an electromagnet or magnets P by means of which brakes are applied to the driven wheels of the vehicle. As shown the armatures Q of magnets P are connected to cranked levers J which normally support curved braking plates H in the raised position shown in Fig. 4 inside mudguard pockets M against the action of springs L which, when the levers J are released, project the plates H downwardly beneath the driving wheels, spikes N on the plates assisting the braking action. The movement of each plate H is limited by a plate K engaging cut-away portions of the plate H.

    • A dispensing vessel for introducing moisture into a clothes drying environment includes a sponge-like core configured to at least temporarily retain a moistening substance therein, a generally oblong-shaped cover substantially surrounding the core and retaining the core in a compressed condition, and a moistening substance retained within the core. The cover includes a fill opening defined therethrough, the fill opening providing access to an interior of the cover from an exterior of the cover, a plurality of protuberances spaced generally evenly from one another, each protuberance having a generally conical shape, and one or more dispensing openings, each dispensing opening disposed at a distal end of a protuberance of the plurality of protuberances, and each dispensing opening providing access to an exterior of the cover from an interior of the cover. Furthermore, each of the dispensing openings is not positioned generally opposite the fill opening.

    • A services gateway, which links client access by any technology to multiple service nodes, even if the client access technology is not directly compatible with the service node. The universal convergence border gateway (UCBG) utilizes the IP layer as a harmonizing layer to decouple standard services from their normally-associated access technologies. This is particularly advantageous with multifunction client devices because the best available wireless access technology can be used independently of the type of service being accessed. The UCBG uses a single encryption scheme to multiplex the traffic for various services with different characteristics into multiple data flows. The UCBG uses a single encryption scheme to converge the data flows to the client using a single control path without losing each traffic's characteristics such as QoS. The gateway also demultiplexes the converged traffic that it receives from the client in order for the data to reach the appropriate service node.

    • Cooling air to the blades and disks of a gas turbine may be modulated to provide a variable turbine cooling flow. A bellows may be extended by providing a high pressure compressor discharge flow to an interior of the bellows. The bellows may be compressed when the interior of the bellows communicates with ambient pressure air. The extension/compression of the bellows moves an arm over orifices in a cooling air flow path. The pressure inside of the bellows is metered to move the arm over at least one orifice, thereby restricting cooling air flow when the engine is running at low power. The pressure inside of the bellows is metered to move the arm to uncover all of the slots to provide maximum cooling flow when the engine is running at high power. The resulting variable cooling flow system results in less need for cooling air at low powers, thus reducing engine fuel consumption.
