    • Cooling air to the blades and disks of a gas turbine may be modulated to provide a variable turbine cooling flow. A bellows may be extended by providing a high pressure compressor discharge flow to an interior of the bellows. The bellows may be compressed when the interior of the bellows communicates with ambient pressure air. The extension/compression of the bellows moves an arm over orifices in a cooling air flow path. The pressure inside of the bellows is metered to move the arm over at least one orifice, thereby restricting cooling air flow when the engine is running at low power. The pressure inside of the bellows is metered to move the arm to uncover all of the slots to provide maximum cooling flow when the engine is running at high power. The resulting variable cooling flow system results in less need for cooling air at low powers, thus reducing engine fuel consumption.

    • An electrical interruption device is disclosed in which an overcurrent protective device is provided to interrupt electric current flow on a sustained overcurrent current occurring. The overcurrent protective device is characterized by a plunger which is held in tension against the force of a spring by a low temperature solder, and further in which a sleeve of insulating material, such as silicone, is provided about the plunger. Preferably, the overcurrent protective device includes a housing, with the plunger disposed in the housing and having one end extending therefrom to provide electric communication with the remainder of the electric circuit. The sleeve of insulating material preferably being located about the end of the plunger which extends from the housing. On a predetermined condition causing the solder to melt, the plunger is released and under the force of the spring is moved to a position retracted within the sleeve, interrupting the current flow. Advantageously, the overcurrent protective device may be used together with pulverulent arc quenching material. The sleeve acts to isolate the pulverulent arc quenching material from the plunger and prevent its interference with the plunger as it is moved under the force of the spring.

    • An ingestible device for delivering a substance to a chosen location in the GI tract of a mammal includes a receiver of electromagnetic radiation for powering an openable part of the device to an opened position for dispensing of the substance. The receiver includes a coiled wire that couples the energy field, the wire having an air or ferrite core. In a further embodiment the invention includes an apparatus for generating the electromagnetic radiation, the apparatus including one or more pairs of field coils supported in a housing. The device optionally includes a latch defined by a heating resistor and a fusible restraint. The device may also include a flexible member that may serve one or both the functions of activating a transmitter circuit to indicate dispensing of the substance; and restraining of a piston used for expelling the substance.

    • A self-transpiring hot skin for a hypersonic or reusable space vehicle that can provide protection to the vehicle during short periods of abnormally high heat flux (either planned in the flight profile or an off-nominal event). The hot skin includes a ceramic composite structure having an internal cavity that is coupled either to the insulating layer or directly to the support structure of the hypersonic vehicle. The internal cavity includes a material system that vaporizes, sublimes or decomposes into a gas when the temperature exceeds the upper temperature capability of the composite material. The gas transpires through the outer layer of the composite material to provide cooling to the outer layer below the upper temperature capability. Cooling may occur both by conduction of heat from the composite material to the transpiring gas and by the interaction of the transpiring gas with the boundary layer of hypersonic flow over the outer surface, leading to a reduction of the heat flux entering the surface.

    • An electrical interruption device is disclosed in which a space efficient spiral spring activates current interruption. The spring is characterized by coils which wind continuously about and approach a central axis, with successive coils of the spring having reduced radius to pass axially through the center of an outwardly adjacent coil. The spring may further be made to assume a flat condition with the spring coils lying flat, nesting interposed between adjacent coils. Advantageously, the spiral spring is conical in shape and is tensioned in a reverse loaded configuration wherein the coils of one end of the spring are pulled axially inward, through and past the coils of other end. Preferably the reverse loaded conical spring forms part of a thermally sensitive device which includes a housing having disposed therein a plunger which is in a biased relationship with the spring. The plunger extends beyond the housing to provide electrical communication with the remainder of the electric circuit, and is held in place against the force of the spring by a meltable solder. On a predetermined condition causing the solder to melt, the plunger is released, whereby it is moved by the force of the spring into the housing and out of electric communication with the remainder of the electric circuit.
