    • A set of keyed electrical connectors consists of a first plug connector (2) a second plug connector (4), a first receptacle connector (6) and a second receptacle connector (8). The first and second plug connectors (2,4) have shielded mating plug portions (21,38) and the first and second receptacle connectors have metal shielding shells (56,60) for receiving respective mating plug portions (28,38) of the plug connectors (2,4). The first plug connector (2) is connected to a first cable (MC1), the second plug connector (4) being connected to a second cable (MC2) which is shorter than the first cable. The receptacle connectors (6,8) are surface mounted and are connected to respective printed circuits. The plug portions and the shielding shells have chamfered keying surfaces (26,42,44,120,126,130) which are so arranged that the plug portion (21) of the first plug connector (2) can be mated only with the shielding shell (56) of the first receptacle connector (6) whereas the plug portion (38) of the second plug connector (4) can be mated, as required, with the shielding shell of either of the receptacle connectors (6,8). The cables (MC1,MC2) are connected to different electronic circuits.

    • An electrical connector (10) for terminating a multi-conductor cable (100) has a housing (12) including a cable terminating face (18), an opposed mating face (16) and opposed end walls (24,26) having latch means (58,60) thereon. The cable terminating face (18) has major edges and minor edges, with the minor edges contiguous with the end walls (24,26). The major edges extend laterally beyond the profile of the mating face (16). The cable terminating face (18) has a rib (44,46) extending along the major edges, upstanding from the cable terminating face (18). A plurality of contacts (30) are secured in the housing (12) and have respective insulation displacement plates (34) extending from the cable terminating face (18). A terminating cover (14) defines an inner surface (80) and major side edges and has latch arms (86, 88) at opposite ends thereof adapted to engage the latch means (58,60) on the connector housing (12) to retain the terminating cover (14) on the housing (12). The terminating cover (14) has an off-set surface (94,96) recessed from the inner surface (80) along the major side edges that cooperates with the rib (44,46) to provide a space through which a ribbon cable (100) terminated to the connector (10) passes and to engage the cable (100) to provide strain relief thereto.

    • An electrical terminal (32) for insertion into a passage (30) in a dielectric housing (22) or a high density ribbon cable connector (20) incorporating the terminal is disclosed. The high density ribbon cable connector (20) has an insulative housing (22) having passages (30) extending therethrough. Each of the passages (30) have an electrical terminal (32) secured therein. Each terminal (32) has a mating section (34), an intermediate section (56) and an insulation displacement section (38). A first transition section (60) is disposed between the mating section (34) and the intermediate section (56); a second transition section (72) is disposed between the intermediate section (56) and the insulation displacement section (38). The intermediate section (56) provides forwardly facing stop shoulders (58) for engagement with stop shoulders (64) in the insulative housing (22) to position the terminal (32) in a passage (30). Each terminal (32) is pushed into a passage (30) in the housing (22) by applying an insertion force on rearwardly facing shoulders (65) on the intermediate section (40). The first transition section (60) provides that the forwardly facing stop shoulders (58) on the intermediate section (46) are not in the same plane as the mating section (34) of the terminal (32). The second transition section (72) positions the insulation displacement section (38) out of the plane of the rearwardly facing insertion force shoulders (65). A termination cover (24) is used to press the ribbon cable (94) onto the insulation displacement sections (38) of the terminals (32), thereby terminating the conductors (92) of the ribbon cable (94) to respective terminals (32).
