The outboard motor features an inline vertically oriented cylinder bank, such that oil introduced at an upper region and drains back to a lubrication pan through the lubrication return passageways arranged at a lower portion of the camshaft chamber and the crankshaft chamber.

摘要： A fuel supply system for use with an engine having four vertically-arranged cylinders and multiple charge formers prevents air or vapor pockets from accumulating within the fuel pump or fuel lines. A pair of fuel pumps are mounted vertically one above the other. A fuel inlet port of each pump is formed at the lower-most portion of the pump. A fuel discharge port is formed at the upper-most portion of each port. A conduit attached to the top fuel pump's discharge port supplies fuel to an uppermost and lowermost carburetor. A conduit from the lowermost fuel pump supplies fuel to the middle two carburetors. The uppermost carburetor's fuel inlet port is positioned vertically higher than the top fuel pump's discharge port. The second carburetor's fuel inlet port is positioned vertically higher than the second fuel pump's discharge port. Air or vapor pockets within the fuel lines naturally migrates through the fuel pump and through the fuel conduits into the carburetors without becoming trapped in the fuel supply system.

摘要： A four-cycle outboard motor has an oil separator positioned within a head cover assembly. The oil separator is positioned within a recess of a cam cover, which forms a portion of the head cover assembly. A cover plate is interposed between the oil separator and a cam chamber. The oil separator includes a generally u-shaped labyrinth through which exhaust gases with entrained lubricant are sucked. A suction portion extends through the cover plate and facilitates communication between the cam chamber and the oil separator. An exhaust return line is connected to an induction system to draw gases through the oil separator back into the induction system.

The engine is provided with an oil reservoir in the upper portion of the drive shaft housing and lower unit. Oil is drained back to this oil reservoir by separate drain passages formed in the cylinder head and in the crankcase. In addition, an improved crankcase ventilating system is provided wherein the crankcase ventilating gases follow a circuitous path through the crankcase chamber, camshaft chambers and then to the intake system so as to reduce the emissions of hydrocarbons.

Sacrificial anodes are positioned both in the main engine body cooling jacket and in the exhaust system cooling jacket. In addition, a temperature sensor is positioned in a low portion of the cooling jacket and where the water has passed through the exhaust cooling jacket and before it enters the main engine body cooling jacket so as to provide accurate temperature indication while protecting the temperature sensor from excess temperature conditions particularly after engine shut off.

摘要： The present invention is an improved oil reservoir for an outboard motor. The oil reservoir is defined by an oil pan portion of an exhaust guide. The exhaust guide includes a support portion which is positioned below an engine powering the motor. The oil pan portion extends downwardly from the support portion. An opening provided in the support portion of the exhaust guide leads to the oil reservoir, serving as an oil return. Preferably, a gasket positioned between the exhaust guide and the engine partially obscures the opening, preventing backflow of oil from the reservoir into the engine when the motor is titled.
