    • In a video disk recording/playback device for converting a digital video signal or the like into high-efficiency coded data and recording the coded data on a video disk, or for restoring high-efficiency coded data recorded on the video disk and reproducing an output image, wherein said digital video signal is composed of a succession of video signals of a plurality of frames and including an I picture encoded within a frame, a P picture interframe coded by forward motion compensation with reference to said I picture and/or another P picture, and a B picture interframe coded by motion compensation in both directions with reference to said I and/or P pictures temporally preceding and succeeding the B picture, there are further provided a means for recording in an image information table set up on said video disk all of the start addresses of coded data representing selected images such as images to be retrieved and the start addresses of data containing information required for reproducing the coded data. With the above configuration, retrieval of all kinds of images of I, P, and B pictures is possible by recording all of the start addresses of coded data representing selected images such as images to be retrieved and the start addresses of data containing information required for reproducing the coded data in the image information table on the video disk.

    • In an image signal encoding method for encoding an image signal using motion compensation, a motion vector is found by means of a block matching method, a first distortion SEmc of motion compensated prediction associated with the motion vector, and a second distortion SEnomc of prediction without motion compensation are detected, the motion vector is used for for inter-picture prediction encoding when SEnomc>SEmc+K, with K being a constant greater than 0, and a vector having a value zero is used, in place of the motion vector, for inter-picture prediction encoding when SEnomc≦SEmc+K. In another aspect, a speed of motion in a sequence of pictures is detected, and for a part of the sequence of pictures detected to contain a quick motion, the prediction encoding is performed using one-way prediction encoding, and for a part of the sequence of pictures without a quick motion, prediction encoding is performed using bi-directional prediction encoding. In another aspect, the image signal is subsampled for each field, and a motion vector is determined using the field-subsampled image signal.

    • An image encoding system according to this invention comprises: a global motion detecting unit for detecting a motion of the whole picture screen between a reduction image of a present frame and a reduction image of a reference frame and for outputting global motion information; and an image encoding unit for performing a motion detection within a peripheral narrow retrieving range on the basis of the global motion information and for encoding an image by using a motion compensation prediction. As a result, an amount of arithmetic operation in the motion detection of the image encoding unit can be reduced.
