    • A top coating composition comprising(A) a polyol resin having a weight average molecular weight of 400 to 2,000 a ratio of weight average molecular weight (Mw) to number average molecular weight (Mn) of not more than 1.6, and a hydroxyl value of 150 to 400 mg KOH/g,(B) at least one polyol resin selected from the group consisting of(1) a polyester polyol having a weight average molecular weight of 2,000 to 50,000, a hydroxyl value of 50 to 200 mg KOH/g, and cyclohexylene ring content of not less than 7 percent by weight,(2) an acrylic polyol resin containing 20 to 60 percent by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic ester of a monohydric alcohol of 6 to 18 carbon atoms, and having a weight average molecular weight of 5,000 to 50,000 and a hydroxyl value of 50 to 180 mg KOH/g, and(3) a mixed polyol resin consisting of a non-aqueous dispersion type acrylic resin prepared by dispersion-polymerizing at least one vinyl monomer in the presence of a polymer dispersion stabilizer and an organic solvent, and a solution type acrylic polyol resin having a weight average molecular weight of 5,000 to 50,000 and a hydroxyl value of 50 to 180 mg KOH/g, and(C) an alkoxy monomeric melamine, wherein (A) accounts for 15 to 60 percent, (B) for 15 to 60 percent, and (C) for 20 to 50 percent by weight based on the total weight of (A), (B) and (C).

    • In a heat-curable coating composition containing an oil-free polyester resin and an aminoaldehyde resin as binder components, the improvement wherein(A) the materials for said oil-free polyester resin contain 40 to 75% by weight, based on the total weight of said materials, of at least one polyester-forming compound selected from the group consisting of(a) an aliphatic dibasic acid represented by the formula HOOC--CH.sub.2 --.sub.n COOH wherein n is an integer of 4 to 10 as a polybasic acid,(b) an aliphatic glycol represented by the formula HO--CH.sub.2 --.sub.n OH wherein n is an integer of 4 to 10 as a polyhydric alcohol, and(c) a lactone represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein n is an integer of 4 to 10, (B) the entire polybasic acid components of the polyester resin contain at least 10%, based on the total weight of said polybasic acid components, of an alicyclic polybasic acid or its anhydride, and(C) the polyester resin has a hydroxyl value of 20 to 95.

    • In a method for applying a metallic finish coat to a substrate which comprises applying a base coat composed of a metallic paint containing a thermosetting resin as a film-forming ingredient to a substrate, applying a top coat composed of a clear paint containing a thermosetting resin as a film-forming ingredient to the surface of the base coat, and heating both the base coat and top coat to cure them, the improvement wherein the film-forming ingredient of the clear paint in the top coat comprises (A) an acrylic resin having a number average molecular weight of 5,000 to 15,000 and a glass transition temperature of from 5.degree. to 35.degree. C. obtained by copolymerizing (a) 42 to 90 parts by weight of at least one methacrylate selected from alkyl methacrylates with the alkyl moiety having 4 to 18 carbon atoms and (b) 10 to 58 parts by weight of a monomer having an ethylenically unsaturated bond and a hydroxyl group in the molecule, the total amount of components (a) and (b) being 100 parts by weight, and (B) an aminoaldehyde resin, the weight ratio of the acrylic resin (A) to the aminoaldehyde resin (B) being from 80:20 to 65:35.
