    • A method and system for detecting, locating and quantifying a physical phenomena such as strain or a deformation in a structure. A plurality of laterally adjacent conductors may each include a plurality of segments. Each segment is constructed to exhibit a unit value representative of a defined energy transmission characteristic. A plurality of identity groups are defined with each identity group comprising a plurality of segments including at least one segment from each of the plurality of conductors. The segments contained within an identity group are configured and arranged such that each of their associated unit values may be represented by a concatenated digit string which is a unique number relative to the other identity groups. Additionally, the unit values of the segments within an identity group maintain unique ratios with respect to the other unit values in the identity group.

A fastening means adapted for use in conjunction with a flexible looped member, such as length of chain or a looped rope, in fastening one object to another object, comprises a support capable of being fixed to one of the objects, an upstanding member in connection with the support and a guard means encircling or partly encircling the free end portion of the upstanding member the latter at its lower portion being capable of having engaged therewith a loop of the flexible looped member and the guard means being capable of preventing the inadvertent disengagement of the loop from the upstanding member when so engaged. In the construction shown in Fig. 13 the support is a plate 1 which is provided with holes so that it can be screwed to the object which, as shown, is a gate post, and the upstanding member is part of a bent rod welded or otherwise secured to the plate; the guard means is a U- shaped steel rod welded or otherwise secured to the plate 1. In a second construction Fig. 5 the support is a shank portion 5 of an element made of steel rod, the upright member being one leg 7 of a U-shaped portion, the other leg 6 of which is integral with the shank portion; the guard means 8 is a ring which encircles the free end portion of the upright member 7 and is secured to the element at the juncture of the shank portion 5 and limb 6 of the U-shaped portion; the shank 5 as shown is screw threaded. but could be tapered so that it could be driven in to a wooden post. In a further construction the support is the shank portion of an L shaped element, the other portion of which constitutes the upright member; the guard means is U- shaped and partly encircles the end portion of the upright member and it is connected to the shank portion by two legs; the shank portion as shown is screw threaded. In a further construction the fastening means consists of a U-shaped member the legs of which are pointed so that they can be driven into the object and a cross member is connected to both legs and supportsa U-shaped member, the free end of one leg of the U- shaped member being connected to the cross member and the other leg constituting the upright member; the guard means is the semicircular web portion of the first U-shaped member which is disposed so as to partly encircle the free end portion of the upright member and the cross member and the two pointed legs of the first U-shaped member constitute the support. In a final construction the fastening means is made from two U- shaped members, a first of said U-shaped members having the free end portion of one of its legs connected to the centre of the semi-circular base portion of the second of the U-shaped members so that the other leg of the first U-shaped member extends between the legs of the second U-shaped member the semi-circular portion of the second U- shaped member constituting the guard means which partially encircles the free end portion of the upstanding member and the support consisting of the two legs of the second U- shaped member which are both pointed so that the second U-shaped member can be driven into the object.
