Arc lamps.-A photographic &c. lamp for use on direct and alternating-current circuits of various pressures, comprising a number of simultaneously-controlled pairs of carbons arranged so that they can be connected with appropriate resistances in series, series-parallel, or parallel, has stationary lower carbons and movable upper carbons carried by sliding members engaged by clutches. In a lamp with four arcs, two arcs and four resistance coils may be in series for 100-110 volts, four arcs and eight resistance coils for 200- 220 volts and four arcs and more than eight resistance coils for 230-250 volts. For higher pressures, two or more lamps may be connected in series. The resistances n, Fig. 5, may be carried by the base of an adjustable stand r carrying the lamp proper and mounted on castors. Four lower carbons b, Figs. 3 and 5, may be clamped in fixed holders d adapted to receive electric coupling bars or the like, while pairs of adjacent upper carbon-holders may be connected so that the current flows in opposite directions in adjacent arcs. Adapter sleeves p are fitted in the negative holders when direct current is used; for alternating current, all the carbons are preferably of large size, say 18 mm. The upper carbon-holders are attached to square sliding tubes f engaged by ring or disc clutches all linked to a pivoted bar k. An arm on the bar is coupled to a rod t which is normally drawn down by a spring or weight so as to lift the clutches as far as allowed by an adjustable stop m; the rod t is actuated by hand to feed the carbons. In a studio lamp, the feed may be effected automatically by means of series and shunt coils and an automatic switch. The carbons may be enclosed in a glazed casing s. Such lamps may be used in the production of kinematograph films, photo-process work, copying, &c.

    • 160,570. Boardman, F. R., Boardman, R. V., and Boardman, F. Dec. 24, 1919. Reflectors; reflectorholders. -A frame g carrying one or more electric are, metal filament, or other lamps a carries on trunnion arms h an adjustable reflecting-hood b to which one or more auxiliary reflectors or screens c are attached by bars i so as to cut off the direct light. The hood b carries slotted plates m and is secured in its adjusted position by means of wing-nuts j screwing on pins which are carried by crank arms l on the arms h and pass through the slotted plates. Where metal filament lamps are used, the reflectors b, c may be coated or tinted so as to give a light resembling daylight. In another construction, the reflector or reflectors c are placed by one or more translucent or diffusing screens consisting of skeleton frames covered with tracing linen &c., which may be coloured for the correction of the diffused light. The frame g may be mounted as shown on a telescopic tube d carried by a wheeled base e and fitted with anti-vibration spring cushions, or the tube d may be arranged to rise and fall between fixed vertical guides or may be suspended from a wall or ceiling by a bracket or other means.
