摘要： For impregnating dressings consisting of absorbent fibrous material there is employed a sterile solution of a salt of penicillin adjusted to a pH value of 5.5-7.5 and preferably 5.5-6.5, which may be prepared from filtered crude penicillin-containing metabolic solutions, or from purified penicillin solutions, or from pure penicillin salts. The penicillin content is recoverable from the impregnated dressings by soaking them in water. Several examples are given, relating to the use of calcium, ammonium, magnesium and a mixture of sodium and potassium salts of penicillin having a bacteriostatic activity ranging between 11 and 900 Oxford units per c.c.ALSO:A dressing consisting of absorbent fibrous material, e.g., cotton gauze, cotton wool, fabrics of glass fibres, nylon, cellulose acetate, spun viscose &c. is impregnated with a sterile solution of a salt of penicillin adjusted to a pH value of 5.5-7.5 and preferably 5.5-6.5, dried to a constant weight and placed in a moisture-proof container. Drying may be effected in a current of air or inert gas such as nitrogen at a temperature not exceeding 120 DEG C., e.g., at 60-85 DEG C. for 5-10 minutes, or by infra-red radiation in a current of air or inert gas, or in vacuo at low temperatures suitably in the presence of a drying agent such as caustic potash or phosphorous pentoxide. The solution employed may be prepared from filtered crude penicillin-containing metabolic solutions, or from purified penicillin solutions, or from pure penicillin salts. The dressings so produced are stable and the penicillin content is recoverable by soaking them in water. Several examples are given, relating to the use of calcium, ammonium, magnesium, and a mixture of sodium and potassium salts of penicillin having a bacteriostatic activity ranging between 11 and 900 Oxford units per c.c.

As shown, the outlet 25 is open and encircled by the ring 31 which, together with the depending member 17, forms a guide for the solid jet of water issuing from the attachments. When the plate 30 is adjusted to cover the outlet 25, the water pressure flares the mouth of the member 17 so that the water issues from the perforations in the plate 24.

摘要： Riboflavin is manufactured by inoculating with Eromothecium Ashbyii, a sterile culture medium containing 1-10 per cent of lentils known as Lens esculenta and from 0.5-10 per cent fermentable carbohydrate, e.g. dark brown sucrose by which means the pH of the fermenting solution is controlled, incubating said medium and obtaining riboflavin therefrom. The culture medium may also contain ammonium ions in the form of ammonium acetate, succinate or fumarate. Detailed examples are given of carrying the invention into effect. [Class 86] [Also in Group VI] A substantially closed apparatus for the manufacture of penicillin and other anti-biotic substances by the growth of moulds according to the method described in Group VI comprises a tank, pot or like fermentation vessel, a high-speed stirrer adapted to produce efficient agitation of liquid in the vessel and at the same time to draw air from the space above the liquid and distribute it in fine particles throughout the liquid, means to bubble sterile air through the liquid against the pressure of the head of liquid and a restricted outlet for air around the point of entry of the stirrer into the vessel. In a preferred apparatus, stirrer 2, Fig. 1, fitted with tube 4 open at both ends and at 5, is rotated at 1,200-1,400 r.p.m. whilst air enters the vessel through ring distributer 6. A gland between cups 8 and 9 restricts the egress of air. The propeller blades shown may be replaced by 3 or 4 blade propellers or by chains of wire loops. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the stirrer shaft is hollow and air is forced down it by means of a scoop device. The ring air distributer may be replaced by a central distributer operating directly under the foot of the stirrer.
