Explosive and combustible gases, detecting.-Apparatus for detecting the presence of explosive and like gases in mines, submarine engine rooms, ships' bunkers,&c. comprises an electric lamp in series with a platinum or other catalytic metal wire and means for utilizing the expansion of the metal wire to break the electric circuit momentarily or permanently. The detecting-apparatus is enclosed in a box b which is secured to the base of the lamp-holder a and provided with a series of perforations c covered with wire gauze. The box contains a pair of bell-crank levers f, g, Fig. 2, which are connected by platinum wires h, k to terminals l. An adjustable contact m is arranged near the end of the lever g, and two such terminals n, o are arranged near the lever f. The lamp circuit is completed normally through the contact o and wire h, but when explosive or like gases enter the box b, the expansion of the wire h is increased and the circuit broken at o. Further expansion of the wire completes the circuit at the contact n, and the lamp remains illuminated until this circuit is broken by the expansion of the wire k. Each wire is kept in tension by a spring r, and when only one wire is employed, a spring of slightly less strength under normal conditions is arranged in opposition to it. A contact may be arranged to short-circuit the lamp if either of the wires breaks. The percentage of explosive or like gas present may be indicated by a recording-clock s, the pointer t of which is actuated by a solenoid u in series with the lamp. The recorder may be arranged in bridge fashion as described in Specification ' 15,831/08, Class 97, Philosophical instruments], for the indication of temperature, and detectors at different stations may be used with a common meter bridge, or a single portable detector may be used if a number of contacts are provided. The apparatus may be arranged to give an audible or visible alarm as in the beforementioned Specification. The battery q is contained in a casing p provided with a hinged side v and with locking means therefor. The projection w is engaged by the hook x on the end of the spring-pressed armature z of the electromagnet 1, the circuit of which is completed to release the projection w by the insertion of a key through the aperture 3. The key is connected to a source of electric energy, and comprises two insulated members adapted to make contact with the plates 6, 7 which are connected to the coil 1.
