    • 14,694. Rule, J. W. A., and Liles, C. E. June 30. Telemeters clinometers; levels; compasses, magnetic.-Relates to a telemeter which may also be modified for use as a clinometer or height-measuring instrument, a level, orasurveying-instrument. A, telescope A, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 9, carries a tube projecting at right - angles and adapted to be arranged either vertically or horizontally. In this tube are two or more mirrors D, C, and an object glass arranged to project a second image of an object into the eyepiece F. Fig. 10 shows to a larger scale the telescope and part of the projecting tube, and Fig. 1 shows the end of the projecting tube. A central, longitudinal, dividing-screen A, Fig. 10, is provided in the telescope tube A, so that the two images appear in separate halves of the field, and part images of the object the distance of which is to be found are brought into coincidence by turning the mirror D on its axis. This mirror is operated by a length of wire G fixed at one end near the mirror, and passing down the tube, around a pulley G', and back to a winch H by which its tension is adjusted. The distance between the wires, at the ends of the tubes, may be determined by fixed and adjustable guides and pulleys G . One wire is connected to an arm D on the mirror D, which is operated, as the angle between the two parts of the wire is varied, by a pin M connected to a perforated band L passing over toothed wheels K, J. The wheel K is operated by a spindle N on which slides an operating-drum 0, having a threaded part to engage a rack F on the eyepiece, and a scale 0 on which the range is indicated by a pointer F . A mirror F may be arranged between the lenses F , F , so as to project an image nf the scale and pointer. In a similar manner, the bubble of a spirit level, the plumb of a plumb line, or the points of the card of a compass may be observed. For night work, the lenses F , F . may be dispensed with. The tube may be protected from disturbances due to variations in temperature by a coating of felt or other non-conductor, and an inside tube P, preferably of square section with webs at the corners, may be used to stiffen the outer tube. Indiarubber or other non-conductor of heat may be placed between the webs and the outer tube. In a simple form of instrument, the pin M is operated by hand, and is arranged so as to indicate the range. When the instrument is used as a clinometer, a level is fixed by means of a bubble or a plumb line, and the movable mirror D is then made to reflect the image of the required height or depth, and the gradient is read on the scale 0 .

    • 1567. Liles, C. E., and Rule, J. W. A. Jan. 22. Range-finders; clinometers; optical squares.- Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section, Fig. 2 a horizontal section, and Figs. 3 and 4 an end elevation and cross-section respectively. Prisms or mirrors G, G' are fixed upon a table F, which can be rotated to a slight extent, upon a pin A' by means of an eccentric pin B , engaging with an arm E attached to the table F. The pin B is on a shaft, which can be rotated by a handle B and passes through a carriage B traversed by a nut D' engaging with a screw D. Sights K , L' are carried by a tube K sliding in the casing H, the front end of which is fitted with a worm R engaging with teeth on the frame A . The upper part of the instrument, carrying the sights, can thus also be rotated about the pin A'. An object then having been sighted directly, the worm R is operated to bring a second object into optical alignment with the first, the second being seen by reflection in the mirrors G, G'. The angle between the two real directions can then be read off on the scale W. By taking a second reading at a second point along the line leading to the second object, the necessary elements for a triangulation are obtained. The second adjustment may be effected by the rotation of the screw D to move the pin B' which operates the lever E'. The original fiducial line or direction may be a vertical obtained by the use of an auxiliary sight screwed into a socket M.
