    • A hologram recording and reproduction method is configured such that the number of values which can be implemented per one pixel is increased from two according to a conventional method to three or more to achieve increase of the data recording capacity. While two values are conventionally represented by two different values of “0” and “1” of the amplitude, for example, phases “0” and “π” are combined with the amplitudes “0” and “1” thereby to make it possible to represent three values of “0,” “1” and “−1” (amplitude “1”×phase “π”). In particular, a two-value data train of “0” and “1” is converted into another data train of three values of “0,” “1” and “−1” in accordance with a rule for encoding determined in advance, and the amplitude “0” is allocated to pixels of the value “0”; the amplitude “1” (phase “0”) is allocated to pixels of the value “1”; and the amplitude “1” and the phase “π” are allocated to pixels of the value “−1,” to carry out recording. Increase of the data recording capacity can be achieved thereby.

    • Disclosed herein is a data identification method for identifying, from within a readout signal from a recording medium on or in which user data of k bits are recorded using a recording modulation code wherein m bits from among n bits which compose one codeword have a value of “1” while the remaining n-m bits have another value of “0”, the data, n and m being integers including, a first step of delimiting the readout signal in a unit of a codeword and adding, with regard to one of the n-bit codewords obtained by the delimiting, an amplitude of the readout signal of the bits of “1” to 2k different codewords which may possibly be recorded and setting results of the addition as evaluation values, and a second step of finding a maximum value among the 2k evaluation values and outputting the maximum value as an evaluation result.

    • A drive apparatus includes a light irradiation section for applying light from a light source via an object lens on a hologram recording medium having a recording layer on which a hologram is formed and a track formation layer on which an address recording track composed of a pit string recording address information representing the hologram recording position on the recording layer and an auxiliary track composed of a continuous groove formed side by side with the address recording track are formed, a light spot displacement section for displacing a light spot formed by the light irradiation section in a radius direction of the hologram recording medium, and a control section for controlling the light spot displacement section following a light information signal upon the auxiliary track traverse of the light spot obtained in accordance with the light spot displacement to execute a jump operation between the address recording tracks.
