The bungee cord (32) biases the ratchet compressor system (8) in an expanded state. Thus, automatic expansion is achieved, in a very easy to use manner. In addition to being operated while the luggage case (2) is open, the ratchet compressor (8) is also operable from the outside of the luggage case (2) once the luggage case (2) has been packed and closed.

    • Luggage cases that are sized and shaped to be carried on to the passenger compartment of a commercial airplane are called carry-on luggage cases. Cases small enough to fit below the passenger seat 28 immediately in front of the traveler must be very small and compact and generally interfere with comfortable placement of the passenger's feet during travel.     • There are many carry-on luggage cases, that is, luggage cases sized to accompany the traveler into the passenger compartment or cabin of a commercial airliner and that can be stowed either under a passenger seat or in an overhead compartment. One problem with many of these cases is that many do not fit efficiently or snugly in the overhead compartments, especially those overhead compartments along the port and starboard sides of the passenger cabin. These overhead compartments taper severely in their back or rearward-most portions. Accordingly, the disclosed carry-on case (2) is specially sized to fit and conform to this tapering shape while simultaneously permitting access to at least one packing compartment (12) when the case (2) is stowed in that overhead compartment. This packing compartment (12) is defined by a lower textile panel (16) and a zipper track (8) that extends along a bottom edge of packing compartment (12). Packing compartment (12) is also accessible from the top of case (2) via a three-sided zipper track (8) that extends along the top edge, right, and left sides of packing compartment (12) to permit all-sided access therein.
