    • The invention is directed to a method for detecting misfires in the combustion of a z-cylinder four stroke internal combustion engine wherein the engine includes a transducer wheel coupled to the crankshaft of the engine and rotating in phase synchronism with the crankshaft. The transducer wheel has typically z/2 segments and the segments are scanned with a sensor device to supply a segment-time signal reflecting the nonuniformity of the rotational movement of the crankshaft with respect to individual ones of the cylinders of the engine. Rough-running values are formed for each cylinder on the basis of the segment times with each of the rough-running values including a component occurring at the frequency of the crankshaft. The component is filtered out and then the filtered rough-running value is compared to a threshold value. A misfire is determined to be present when the filtered rough-running value exceeds the threshold value.

    • The invention is directed to an arrangement for centering conduits to facilitate coupling an end flange of a stationary conduit with an end flange of a conduit section removable in the vertical direction. The conduits interconnect materials processing apparatus in a large-area cell for reprocessing irradiated nuclear fuel. The interface separating the connected flanges is in a vertical plane. The joining of the stationary end flange to the end flange of the movable conduit section is carried out by remote handling and the operator performs the connecting process with the aid of a television monitor. To enable the process of coupling the flanges to be carried out quickly, safely, and in a simple manner, the arrangement of the invention includes an upwardly projecting vertical centering key mounted on the stationary pipe conduit. A V-shaped guide defining mutually adjacent centering surfaces is mounted on the removable conduit section. When the removable conduit section is brought together with the stationary pipe conduit for coupling, the centering surfaces are brought into contact engagement with the key for finely guiding the removable conduit member as the same is moved in elevation so as to cause the respective longitudinal axes of the conduit members to be aligned with each other. The centering arrangement of the invention is an optical aid and provides a visual indication of the position of the conduit section as the latter is moved close to the stationary conduit member and then finely guides the conduit section into its end position.

    • The invention is directed to a method for detecting combustion misfires on the basis of a first input feature signal in which the nonuniformity of the rotational movement (on the basis of rpm or segment times) of the engine is mapped within the first order. According to the method, a permanent misfire at a cylinder is preliminarily detected when a first threshold value is exceeded by the amount of a first input feature signal and a detection signal for permanent misfires at several cylinders is active (and in this way, permanent misfires at several cylinders are recognized) when a threshold value is exceeded by the magnitude of further assigned input feature signals or by the magnitude of the first feature signal when a second threshold value is exceeded. The detection signal for permanent misfires at a cylinder is always switched to be inactive when there is an active detection signal for permanent misfire at several cylinders.     • The invention is directed to a remotely-operable positioning and carrier aratus for remote-handling equipment for use in large-area cells containing process components. The apparatus is mounted on a lifting device of an overhead bridge crane. The apparatus achieves good positioning of the particular remote-handling equipment even at locations which are poorly accessible. The apparatus includes a horizontal beam which is fixed at an eccentric position thereon to the bottom sheave unit of the lifting device so that the horizontal beam defines a long lever arm and a short lever arm. A receiving lever is pivotally connected to the end of the longer lever arm. The receiving lever has an equipment receiving device at its free end. A displaceable counterweight is arranged on the short lever arm for altering the position of the center of gravity of the apparatus. This apparatus makes it possible also to operate in spaces beneath components present in a rack. It is further possible for vertical forces to be applied to objects on one side in parallel relationship to the line of action of the lift cable of the lifting device. With the apparatus of the invention, it is possible to operate with a crane in areas inaccessible with the hook of the crane lifting device.

    • An arrangement for centering and manipulating conduits is disclosed. The angement is an aid for connecting flanges together by remote control and can be used to connect the end flange of a stationary conduit to an end flange of a removable conduit portion. The use of the centering and manipulating arrangement is in a process cell such as a large-area cell for reprocessing irradiated nuclear fuels. The interface plane of the two end flanges to be connected together is disposed perpendicularly. In order to permit rapid and secure coupling, with a low level of technical complexity, the end flange of the stationary conduit is provided with an upwardly open guide cradle at its peripheral edge. The guide cradle is arranged in parallel relationship to the rotational axis of the end flange and is mounted laterally thereon. In the rearward region which is towards the stationary conduit, the guide cradle includes a catch ring. A guide pin which fits into the guide cradle is secured laterally to the periphery of the associated end flange of the removable conduit portion. In the connected condition of the flange pairs, the guide pin lies in the guide cradle and projects through the catch ring.

For this purpose, the conduit section has two connecting end flanges lying in respective planes parallel to each other and with their flange engaging surfaces facing in the same direction. The stationary end flanges which have to be interconnected by the conduit section are also arranged parallel to each other and their flange engaging surfaces face in the same direction. The flange engaging surfaces of the two stationary end flanges to be interconnected face in a direction directly opposite to the flange engaging surfaces of the connecting end flanges on the conduit section.
