[Class 38 (v)] [See also Group XXIX] Apparatus for automatically operating gas cocks or electric switches at predetermined times, which times are automatically adjusted according to the period of the year, comprises a rotary dial plate 3 driven by clockwork or by an electric synchronous motor to make one revolution every twenty-four hours, with two tappet levers 1a 1b with tappet pins 16a, 16b adapted to engage and actuate the cock or switch " on " and " off " respectively. The levers 1a, 1b are pivoted about the hub 2 of the plate 3 and have cranked extensions 4a, 4b which are linked to crank-pins 13a, 13b carried on worm wheels 6a, 6b operated by a worm 7. The worm 7 is moved through one-fifth of a revolution every complete revolution of the dial plate, i.e. every twenty-four hours, by a fixed projection engaging a fivepointed star-wheel 8 to effect a relative adjustment of the levers 1a, lb. The " dead centre " positions of the cranks are arranged to occur at those periods of the year when the change in sunrise or sunset is least rapid.

[Class 20 (i)] [See also Group XI] In a lamp, suitable for street illumination or trafficwarning purposes, light projected downwardly from a source in the head of a column is reflected through one or more windowed walls or portions of the column by means of one or more reflecting surfaces which are inclined to the vertical and taper in width to reduced dimensions from their upper to their lower ends. In the form shown, light from a source c within a lantern d, which projects light laterally and which may carry traffic directions, is projected downwardly by a reflector e on to four troughshaped reflecting surfaces f made of stainless steel or chromium and arranged back to back to enclose a space for electric leads or a gas supply pipe leading to the source c from an automatic timing device b in the base of the column a. An inclined flat reflector h may be arranged at the foot of each reflecting surface f to reflect light upwards on to the adjacent window g. The sides of the reflecting surfaces f may be flat or curved outwardly whilst the central portions may be formed with one or more longitudinally extending re-entrant ridges which increase in width and depth towards their lower ends or are of uniform width throughout their length. In a modified form, the reflecting surface is tubular and is formed with a longitudinal slot which registers with a longitudinal strip of red glass or the like carried by one of the walls of the column.

[Class 135] Apparatus for opening and closing gas, water, &c. taps at predetermined times of the kind comprising a clockwork driven dial k on which are adjustably mounted two tappets l, l respectively actuating a lever f fixed to the tap spindle g and a pivoted trip catch m which holds the lever in the closed position of the tap until tripped by its respective tappet l so as to allow the lever to return quickly to the valve-open position, has the contacting parts of the lever f and the closing tappet l so shaped and related that at a predetermined time the tap is partly closed so that a reduced supply of gas or other fluid is maintained for a period, at the end of which the supply is cut off. As shown, the lever f is provided with a cam surface x for this purpose. The lever f is urged to the valve-open position by a spring and rests in that position against a stop h. A projection f on the lever f displaces the catch m which is pressed upwardly by a spring m . The invention is applicable to the automatic control of gas street lamps, which are thereby provided with a reduced gas supply for a period before being extinguished. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention may be employed to close water taps gradually so as to eliminate water hammer.

    • A bone attachment assembly for a remaining portion of a long bone diaphysis following resection is provided. The assembly includes a main body, means for anchoring the device with respect to the remaining bone portion, such as an anchor body, and means for attaching the main body to the means for anchoring. The means for attaching the main body may preferably be in the form of one or more washer springs retained upon a connecting rod attached to the means for anchoring. The assembly may be connected to an orthopedic appliance, an interposed orthopedic appliance connected to a second bone attachment assembly, or a transcutaneous bar for attaching an external appliance. A reaming device for creating an intramedullary cavity, a guide device for guiding an aperture-forming procedure in a remaining bone portion, and a milling device for shaping an interface surface of the bone in a preselected geometry are also provided. In the method of the present invention, a cavity is created within a remaining bone portion using the reaming device. At least one aperture is created using the guide device, and the bone surface is milled to a preselected geometry using the milling device. The above components are then assembled together within the cavity to form the device of the present invention. The device may then be connected to other devices as stated above. A bone attachment assembly may also be provided having a compliant section integrally disposed that is operable for being converted to a preselected condition of expansion prior to or following implantation.
