    • A method is provided for forming enlarged cylinder bores in an engine based on a family of internal combustion engines having an original cylinder bore axis for each bore, wherein each cylinder bore is constrained against enlargement toward one side. The method includes providing an offset axis parallel to the original cylinder bore axis and spaced toward an opposite side of the cylinder bore by a dimension equal to one half of a predetermined bore diameter enlargement, and centering the enlarged cylinder bore on the offset axis. The method preserves a minimum wall thickness from the cylinders to camshaft bores between the cylinder banks while the outward enlargement dimension is preferably limited to a value which does not require changing the cylinder head bolt pattern or reduce the wall thickness below minimum values in other portions of the cylinders.

    • A boring machine includes a power unit having a housing, a drive member for engaging a boring bar, and a motor for driving the drive member to rotate relative to the housing. The boring machine also includes a bearing assembly comprising an inner bearing member defining a passage through which the boring bar extends, and an outer bearing member in which the inner bearing member is fitted in a manner permitting angular movement of the inner bearing member relative to the outer bearing member about axes perpendicular to the axis of the passage defined by the inner bearing member. In use, the bearing assembly is attached to a workpiece in a manner preventing movement of the outer bearing member relative to the workpiece, and a collapsible torque transmission linkage connects the housing of the power unit to the outer bearing member, whereby the housing unit is held against rotation relative to the outer bearing member.

    • Method and apparatus for conducting boring of a series of spaced walls on a workpiece using a self-adjusting boring bar. The method comprises: (a) supporting a spindle in a rotationally fixed tubular housing to provide an assembly having an unsupported extremity adapted to extend throughout the series of walls, the support providing for independent rotary movement but conjoint axial movement of the spindle within such tubular housing, such spindle carrying a cutting tool to project beyond the tubular housing; (b) providing an angularly flexible joint in each of said spindle, such as complementary curvilinear splines on two mated ends of different portions of said spindles, and tubular housing, such as separate tubular housing sections coupled by a web; (c) advancing the cutting tool successively through the series of walls to machine the aligned openings and thereby causing the spindle and tubular housing to follow successively through such machined openings, said spindle and housing providing, during advancement to machine the second and successive walls of the series, (i) concentric macroalignment of the spindle within the tubular housing and macroalignment of the tubular housing within the walls of the openings, and (ii) a sense of microalignment of the housing within at least the previously machined; and (d) in response to a sensed micromisalignment of said spindle head, selectively imparting a microangular steering force to the tubular housing and thereby to the spindle to achieve the desired microalignment. The apparatus employs a split tubular housing with piezoelectric means for imparting microscale angular adjustments.

    • A feed attachment for controlling the axial movement of a rotatable boring bar relative to a workpiece. The feed attachment includes a split clamp selectively secured to the boring bar for rotation with the boring bar about its axis. A collar is rotatably mounted concentrically with respect to the split clamp by a bearing which permits the collar to rotate about the axis independently of the boring bar and split clamp. A plate threadably engages the collar one one one side thereof and nonrotatably engages a workpiece on the other side thereof. The collar and plate are threadably engaged so that rotation of the collar moves the collar, base portion, and boring bar axially with respect to the plate and the workpiece. The plate is adaptable to nonrotatably engage workpieces of differing surface configurations.
