    • The invention provides a drilling apparatus and method for drilling a hole in a workpiece. The drilling apparatus includes means for rotating a drill bit and means for advancing the rotating drill bit into a workpiece to a first depth. The drilling apparatus further includes means for dwelling the drill bit within the workpiece at the first depth for a dwell time and means for further advancing the rotating bit to a second depth after the dwell time has expired. The drilling method includes rotating a drill bit and advancing the rotating drill bit into the workpiece to a first depth. The method farther includes dwelling the drill bit within the workpiece at the first depth for a dwell time and further advancing the rotating bit to a second depth after the dwell time has expired.

    • A countersink cage for controlling a rotating countersink cutter to penetrate to a predetermined depth through a curved surface along a cutting axis. More specifically, the countersink cage comprises a top cage member with a top aperture which is formed for receiving the rotating countersink cutter axially therethrough. Rotatably attached to the top cage member is a bottom cage member. The bottom cage member has a bottom aperture aligning itself with the top aperture for receiving the rotating countersink cutter axially therethrough. Further, two contact members extend from the bottom cage member. The two contact members are sized and configured to contact the curved surface when the countersink cutter penetrates therethrough along the cutting axis to the predetermined depth.

    • An apparatus for radially adjusting a position of at least one tool cartridge includes a machine tool having rotatable, concentric, elongate, inner and outer drive spindles with at least one pocket formed in the outer drive spindle exposing at least one corresponding portion of the inner drive spindle. A wedge is disposed in each pocket for movement relative to the longitudinal axis of the inner drive spindle and is responsive to relative rotation of the inner drive spindle with respect to the outer drive spindle. Each wedge has a threaded surface operably engageable with either a threaded portion of the inner drive spindle, or a threaded portion of the outer drive spindle. A tool cartridge is operably engaged within each pocket of the outer drive spindle for radial movement relative to the longitudinal axis of the outer drive spindle in response to relative movement of the corresponding wedge. A ring spring is provided for urging each tool cartridge into operable engagement with the corresponding wedge with sufficient strength to maintain operable engagement at maximum rotational speed. A controller is provided for controlling the relative rotation of the inner spindle with respect to the outer spindle in response to at least one input signal. The controller can compensate for wear of a tool connected to the tool cartridge with relative rotation of the inner spindle with respect to the outer spindle. The controller can also adjustably position each tool cartridge with respect to the outer spindle during a machining operation.

    • A compact autofeed drill is provided and generally comprises an elongate housing having opposed ends, a motor disposed within the housing, an elongate drill bit, a drill bushing, an actuation device, and a resilient member. The motor is disposed within the housing intermediate the opposed ends. The drill bit is operably connected to the motor and is capable of extending from the housing through one end thereof. The drill bushing is operably connected to the housing and defines a bore, where the drill bushing at least partially surrounds the drill bit as the drill bit extends from the housing through the bore. The actuation device is remotely disposed with respect to the housing and is operably connected thereto, wherein the actuation device is capable of causing the motor to rotate the drill bit and is also capable of causing the drill bit to extend from the housing. The resilient member is operably connected between the housing and the motor and is capable of retracting the drill bit into the housing upon deactuation of the actuation device. The housing is generally cylindrical and defines a central axis, wherein the axis is substantially perpendicular to the end of the housing through which the drill bit extends. In addition, at least one of the motor and the drill bit may be axially moveable with respect to the housing to facilitate extension of the drill bit from the housing. Generally, the drill is adapted to drill a hole in a workpiece and a portion of the housing is adapted to collect chip swarf produced by the drill bit as the hole is drilled. The actuation device may operate under, for example, pneumatic control or electrical control, wherein the control causes the motor to rotate the drill bit and also causes the drill bit to extend from the housing. An associated drilling method and apparatus are also provided.
