    • An axle driving apparatus for being mounted on the body frame of a vehicle and for independently rotating drive wheel members. The axle driving apparatus includes a first axle driving unit (18L) having a housing (40) and a single axle (20L), the single axle (20L) defining a proximal end portion rotatably mounted in the housing (40) and a distal end portion extending outwardly from a first side of the housing (40). An enlarged region is defined by the housing (40), with the enlarged region extending substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the single axle (20L). A hydraulic stepless speed change assembly (22) is disposed within the enlarged region. The speed change assembly (22) includes a hydraulic pump (52) having an input shaft (21) projecting from the enlarged region and includes a hydraulic motor (55) including an output shaft (74) drivingly connected to the single axle (20L). The first axle driving unit (18L) is used in conjunction with a second axle driving unit (18R) which is adjacently disposed to the first axle driving unit (18L) on the body frame of the vehicle and which is of substantially similar construction. However, the second axle driving unit (18R) features a single axle (20R) which extends outwardly from a second, opposite side of the housing (40) such that the axles (20L, 20R) are oppositely disposed.

    • A transaxle apparatus provided with a planetary gear type differential The differential comprises a pair of co-axial axles, a sun gear, a center gear serving as a driving input gear, a pair of carriers, a pair of ring gears serving as steering input gears, and planet gears. The center gear interlocks with the sun gear. The pair of carriers are fixedly disposed around the respective axles oppositely to each other with respect to the center gear. The pair of ring gears are rotatably disposed around the respective carriers so as to slidably abut at their inner peripheral surfaces against outer peripheral surfaces of the respective carriers. Each of the ring gears is extended between the sun gear and each of the carriers disposed in the ring gear so as to be inner peripherally formed into an internal gear. Each of the carriers is integrally provided with a plurality of projections projecting toward the center gear between the sun gear and the internal gear. The planet gears are rotatably disposed around the respective projections of the carrier so as to engage with the sun gear and the internal gear. The projection is preferably formed of the carrier. Tips of teeth of the internal gear are extended toward the axis of the axle further than the inner peripheral surface of the ring gear slidably abutting against the outer peripheral surface of the carrier.

    • A transaxle apparatus is constructed so that left and right axles, two hydrostatic transmissions (HSTs), one for driving a vehicle and the other for steering it, and a differential unit for differentially connecting said axles with each other are together contained in a housing. The driving HST is disposed so that its hydraulic pump and motor are aligned along either a left or right side of the housing. The steering HST is disposed so that its hydraulic pump and motor are aligned along either a front or rear side of the housing. The differential unit is laterally opposite to the driving HST. Either the left or right axle crosses the driving HST between its hydraulic pump and motor. The two HSTs are provided with one or two flat center sections disposed in the housing. The cylinder blocks of the hydraulic pumps and motors of the two HSTs are mounted on either a top or bottom surface of the center section or sections. Power transmission mechanisms for transmitting output power from the hydraulic motors of the two HSTs into the differential unit are disposed on an opposite side of the center section(s) as the cylinder blocks. A charge pump may be attached onto the center section, and a conduit for sending fluid discharged from the charged pump into one or both HSTs may be partly extended outside the housing so as to be cooled by the atmosphere.

    • A transaxle (1), having a hydraulic drive unit (20) and a pair of left and right wheel support units (2L and 2R), is suspended from a vehicle frame so as to be turnable around a turning-center axis oriented in a fore-and-aft direction of a vehicle. The hydraulic drive unit (20) comprises: a pair of left and right hydraulic motors (23L and 23R) having respective left and right horizontal motor shafts (23b); a center section (22) formed therein with an oil passage for hydraulically connecting at least one of the hydraulic motors to a hydraulic pump, the center section having motor attachment surfaces onto which the hydraulic motors are attached; and a pair of left and right axle casings (2L and 2R) containing the respective hydraulic motors and supporting the respective motor shafts. The pair of wheel support units (30L and 30R), supporting respective left and right travel wheels (1L and 1R), are joined to respective outer ends of the left and right axle casings, and drivingly connected to the respective motor shafts (23b).
