    • Search time increases if spherical aberration has to be varied for each radial location due to the influence of a disk or lens tilt. An optical disk device includes a spherical aberration search unit (spherical aberration setter 52) for varying an amount of spherical aberration applied to a light beam, a focus search unit (focus movement calculator 47 and focus search drive generator 49) for moving the focal point of the light beam from a current information plane to a target information plane, a track search unit (track movement calculator 48 and track search drive generator 50) for moving the focal point of the light beam from a current track to a target track, and a search procedure indication unit (search procedure indicator 41) for actuating the spherical aberration search unit, the focus search unit, and the track search unit, in that order, at the time of a search. The search time is reduced by changing the spherical aberration all at once, both for movement in the layer direction and for movement in the radial direction.

    • An optical disk apparatus includes an optical detector which has light receiving areas divided nearly concentrically with an optical beam and outputs a signal corresponding to the amount of the reflected light from an optical disk. A surface vicinity detecting section adds up signals from all the light-receiving areas of the optical detector and outputs a detection signal. The detection signal continuously varies so as to have one maximum level while a beam spot of the optical beam moves from the surface of the information medium to the information plane. An information plane detecting section judges that the focus or the beam spot of the optical beam comes closer to the information plane of the optical disk by detecting the gradient of the detection signal. An approach of a condensing lens and the optical disk is judged based on the judgment results, and thus a collision of the condensing lens and the optical disk can be prevented.

    • An optical disk apparatus is provided with an actuator that moves a beam spot that is formed by an optical head on an optical disk to recording surfaces; position control portions that control a position of the beam spot based on the output signal of the optical head; a disturbance estimation observer relating to the actuator; and a summing circuit that takes a sum of the output of the position control portion and the output of the observer, so as to drive the actuator based on the output of the summing circuit. The optical disk apparatus further is provided with a system controller that turns the observer on and off, a LPF that attenuates the high-frequency components of the output of the observer and retains the final value of the observer when the observer is turned off, and a switching circuit that switches between the output of the observer and the output of the LPF according to whether the observer is on or off. When the observer processing is off, the output of the LPF is supplied to the summing circuit. Thereby, instability in the control due to observer processing can be avoided even at the time of mode transition or addition of disturbance from outside.
