The invention is characterized in that the sensor (1) is adapted to generate said current (I) by means of a transport of oxygen ions in the sensor (1) which essentially originates from oxides of nitrogen being part of the gas, independently from the content of oxygen in said gas. By means of the invention, an improved sensor for detection of oxides of nitrogen, in particular in connection with exhaust gas systems in vehicles, is provided.
