    • @ A rotary vane pump (150) includes a shaft (164) of uniform diameter over at least the portion of its length passing through a cavity (180) in a liner member (162) which is eccentric to the shaft and a pair of end bearings (158,160) defining opposite end faces of the cavity. Vanes (170-176) extend from the shaft into contact with the eccentric cavity and define pumping pockets which expand and contract as the shaft rotates. The rotating shaft (164) is mounted substantially tangent to the cavity (180) in the liner (162) and is journal mounted in such end bearings (158, 160) which seal opposite ends of the pumping pockets. The vanes (170-176) are positioned axially of the shaft by means of a groove (222) formed in one end face of the liner and corresponding tabs (200-206) which project radially from each of the vanes. Alternatively, the groove (232) may be formed by providing a separate wafer (230) adjacent one end of the pump liner (228) having an internal bore (232) of a greater diameter than the internal diameter (229).of the liner. By providing the shaft (164) with a uniform diameter over a substantial portion of its length, multiple pumping units (266-268, 280-282) may be mounted on such uniform diameter portion.

    • A rotary piston machine which may operate as an internal combustion engine, steam engine, compressor or pump. The machine comprises a housing (5) having a cylindrical cavity with circumferentially disposed compression volume recesses (7 and 7A) alternating with circumferentially disposed expansion volume recesses (11 and 11A). A rotary piston (4) is rotatably mounted within the housing (5) about an axis coaxial therewith. A plurality of sliding vanes (1) are disposed radially and symmetrically about the rotary piston (4) to form with the housing (5) a plurality of chambers which vary in volume on relative rotation between the rotary piston (4) and housing (5). When operating as an internal combustion engine, each sliding vane (1) compresses a charge of air inducted via intake ports (3 and 3A) in the compression volume recesses (7 and 7A) and propels the compressed charge into the forward ignition chamber (18) whereafter a metered quantity of fuel is injected thereinto by fuel injectors (9 and 9A) and the air-fuel mixture ignited by spark plugs (10 and 10A). Expansion of the combustion gases in the expansion volume recesses (11 and 11A) creates a force on the sliding vane (1) causing the rotary piston (4) to rotate, the exhaust gases thereafter being expelled through exhaust ports (12 and 12A).

    • An axial vane rotary device (14) includes a stator (16) with a cylindrical internal chamber (34) defined by an annular outer wall (40) and two side walls (36, 38) of the stator. Each side wall has an annular cam surface (42, 44). A rotor (54) is rotatably mounted within the chamber. The rotor has an annular outer wall (66) and a plurality of angularly spaced-apart, axially extending slots (64) extending therethrough. A vane (68) is slidably received in each slot. The vanes reciprocate axially and alternatively expand and compress spaces between adjacent vanes and the cam surfaces as the rotor rotates. The cam surfaces have alternating first portions (92) and second portions (90). The second portions are further from the rotor than the first portions. The first portions of one said cam surface are aligned with second portions of another said cam surface. The slots extend radially outwards on the rotor to the annular outer wall thereof. The outer edge of each vane slidably engages the annular outer wall of the stator. Each vane has an enlarged outer portion (75) slidably received in an enlarged outer portion (65) of one said slot (64).
