    • A glass bottle production line comprising a bottle mold which has a plurality of mold cavities arranged in a predetermined order for forming bottles from glass parisons and for transferring the bottles to a conveyor in a predetermined sequence corresponding to the predetermined order of the mold cavities. The conveyor has a hot end portion and a cold end portion for receiving bottles from the bottle mold at an elevated temperature at the hot end portion and conveying the bottles to the cold end portion. A hot bottle inspector located at a fixed inspection station along the conveyor at the hot end portion non-touchingly inspects the bottles as the bottles are conveyed past the inspection station by the conveyor. A mold transfer signal and bottle detection signal are processed to determine the mold cavity used to produce the bottle detected at the inspector's station.

    • A monitoring apparatus (1) for monitoring soil build-up in a pipe (6) which may form part of a pipework system including a heat exchanger. The pipework system is used in e.g. the heat treatment of milk and milk products. The monitoring apparatus (1) is in thermal connection with the pipe (6) and includes a body (2) capable of being heated by a heater. The power supplied to the heater is controlled and monitored such that a change in power input to the heater is indicative of a change in heat transfer to a fluid (8) flowing through the pipe (6). The heat from the apparatus (1) causes localized soil build-up in a portion of the pipe (6) near to the heated body (2). The soil build-up is representative of the soil build-up in the heat exchanger. The cleaning of the pipe (6) may be based on the soil build-up indicated by the monitoring apparatus (1).

    • This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for an optical system including a light guide and a plurality of angled slots. The angled slots are defined by undercuts in the light guide and are filled with a filler material having a refractive index that is mismatched with the refractive index of the light guide material by about 0.3 or less. The angled slots are configured to eject light out of the light guide principally by Fresnel reflections. Layers formed of the filler material can be disposed along each of the bottom and top major surfaces of the light guide. In some implementations, the light guide is attached to a light source. The light source emits light that is injected into the light guide and the angled slots redirect the light out of the light guide toward a desired target. In some implementations, the target is a display.
