    • In a radiation image read-out system wherein a radiation image recorded on a recording medium through an irradiation field stop is read out and the read-out image signals are subjected to an image processing, the image processing conditions are determined or adjusted based on the histogram of the image signals. In a radiation image read-out system wherein a radiation image is recorded on a recording medium through an irradiation field stop and preliminary read-out is conducted prior to final read-out, and the image signals read out by the final read-out are subjected to an image processing, final read-out conditions and/or image processing conditions are determined or adjusted based on the histogram of the image signals obtained by the preliminary read-out. In both cases, prospective edge point signals, which are considered to be signals representing edge portions of an irradiation field on the stimulable phosphor sheet, are detected from the image signals. A region of a level lower than a characteristic value representing the prospective edge point signals is removed from the histogram, and the final read-out conditions and/or the image processing conditions are adjusted based on the histogram outside of the lower level region.

    • Markers for providing reference points or lines are recorded together with radiation images on stimulable phosphor sheets in a position fixed with respect to the radiation images. The stimulable phosphor sheets are scanned with stimulating rays, and the spatial coordinates of reference points or lines are detected from digital data of the images detected from light emitted from the stimulable phosphor sheets. Rotation and shift among the radiation images are calculated based on the reference points or lines. One of the radiation images is rotated on the digital data when positional deviation exists and moved on the digital data when positional deviation exists. Subtraction of the image data is then conducted among the corresponding picture elements of the radiation images to extract an image of a specific portion of the radiation images.

    • A stimulable phosphor sheet, on which a radiation image of an object has been stored, is exposed to stimulating rays, which cause the stimulable phosphor sheet to emit light in proportion to the amount of energy stored thereon during its exposure to radiation. The emitted light is detected by a photoelectric read-out device, and an image signal representing the radiation image is thereby obtained. Threshold value processing is carried out in accordance with the obtained image signal, and a prospective abnormal pattern is thereby detected from the radiation image. A predetermined threshold value, which is used in the threshold value processing for detecting the prospective abnormal pattern, is set to be a small value as the amount of change in the image signal corresponding to the region in the vicinity of the prospective abnormal pattern becomes large.
