    • A twin clutch transmission for a large horsepower vehicle having a compact size and a high transmission efficiency is obtained. In a twin clutch transmission, there are provided an input shaft, an odd-numbered level speed change mechanism 30, an even-numbered level speed change mechanism 60, a synchronizing speed change mechanism 100, and an output mechanism 90. The speed change mechanisms 30 and 60 include transmission gear trains 32 and 62, main clutches 34 and 64 for selectively transmitting the powers of the transmission gear trains 32 and 62 to the transmission shafts 40 and 70. The synchronizing speed change mechanism 100 includes synchronizing gear trains 110 and 120 for coupling the rotation of the odd-numbered level transmission shaft 32 with the rotation of the even-numbered level transmission shaft 62, and synchronizing clutches 112 and 122 for selecting coupling by this synchronizing gear train.

    • A thyristor chopper whose gate signal is controlled by a magnetic phase shifter is connected between a battery and a series motor of an electric vehicle and is short-circuited by a bypass contactor as soon as the duty factor of the chopper attains 100%. In the short-circuited condition of the chopper, the magnetic phase shifter remains idle and does not participate in the control operation although the instruction current and the actual motor current are kept applied to its control windings. Therefore, the level of the output from the magnetic phase shifter is indicative of the value of the actual motor current when the instruction current value is fixed, so that the actual motor current value can be detected by detecting the output level from the magnetic phase shifter. When the actual motor current value is detected to be excessively large, the bypass contactor short-circuiting the chopper is released to decrease the value of the motor current, while when the actual motor current value is detected to be excessively small, a field-weakening contactor is closed to connect a field-weakening resistor in parallel with the field winding of the series motor so as to accelerate the motor by the field-weakening control.

    • A protective circuit for protecting a main d.c. circuit of the kind comprising a d.c. power source, a d.c. load, a contactor and a chopper. In the protective circuit, a resistor is connected in parallel with the series-connected contactor and load to permit continuous application of power supply voltage across the chopper. A circuit is connected to the connection point of the load and chopper to provide a signal synchronous with on-off of the chopper, and the output signal of this circuit and a signal corresponding to a chopper-on signal are applied to a logic circuit which provides the logical sum of these inputs for the detection of commutation failure of the chopper. The output of the logic circuit turns on a thyristor for deenergizing the contactor thereby disconnecting the load from the power source.
