摘要： PURPOSE:To simply obtain a base material for an optical fiber with a desired refractive index distribution by forming a sintered body of glass fine powder while changing the concn. of gaseous starting material in synchronism with the reciprocating motion of a gaseous starting material supply inlet. CONSTITUTION:Gaseous starting material for forming glass is supplied to central part 13 of oxyhydrogen flame 12 of burner 11 from gaseous starting material supply system 16 to form sintered body 19 of glass fine powder. At this time, burner 11 is moved back and forth with driving mechanism 14, and simultaneously motor 15 for driving mechanism 14 and system 16 are controlled with controller 17 to change the concn. of the supplied starting material in synchronism with the reciprocating motion of burner 11. For example, when burner 11 is at the lowermost end and flame 12 contacts with the tip of conical growing part 18 and its vicinity, by increasing the concn. of GeCl4 in the starting material, the refractive index of the central part of columnar body 19 can be made higher than that of the peripheral part.

Body 24 is then heated to obtain a superhigh purity quartz glass pipe contg. a reduced amount of transition metals causing optical loss, having a predetermined inside diameter and mirror-like inner and outer surfaces, and suitable for use as a material for a low loss optical fiber.

摘要： PURPOSE:To economically provide optical communication fibers having good precision in lengthwise direction while reducing heat needed for contracting diameter by a method wherein the internal of base material tube is exhausted to vacuum in process diameter-contraction heating in which matrix rod is inserted into matrix tube. CONSTITUTION:A core-forming matrix rod 1 for optical fiber consists of silica glass containing dopant such as Ge2O3 which enhances refractive index. Such a rod 1 is inserted into pure silica matrix tube 2 in concentric way, one end 4 is sealed, the other end 5 is exhausted by vacuum pump 6 and is made vacuum. The matrix tube 2 is heated by moving oxy-hydrogen burner 7 in lengthwise direction at a given speed, so that the diameter of the tube 2 is contracted while maintaining the tube 2 temperature below decomposition temperature of dopant on the surface of the rod 1 or below deformation temperature of the rod 1. The obtained matrix is heated and melted as usual, is drawn, and made into fine fiber. Diameter contraction at low temperature and under reduced pressure eliminates remaining bubble due to thermal decomposition of Ge2O3 and reduces required heat and deformation due to diameter contraction.

摘要： PURPOSE:To realize a nondestructive and simplified test for the preform structure by making use of the fact that the moire stripes are capable of a macroscopic magnification of the minute structure in order to analize the moire stripes of the preform and thus to measure the core diameter and the distribution form of the refractive index. CONSTITUTION:Preform 6 to be tested is held into the matching oil in transparent container 7, and the light beam sent from Na lamp 9 is made to pass through moire grid 1 through lens 10. The light beam then crosses preform 6 from the side surface as shown by segment 11 and then projected on screen 13 via lens 12 after passing through moire grid 2. Container 7 is put on shift stage 14 of Y-Z direction and then shifted along the moire stripes while watching the screen, and shift amount DELTAZ is read out through recorder 15. In this case, curve 16 shows the form of the measured moire stripes. The core diameter con be obtained directly from the distance between two peaks of the curve, and furthermore the distribution form and the difference of the refractive index can be calculated by analyzing the form of the curve.
