摘要： PURPOSE:To produce a porous preform by setting a jacket burner over a clad burner in close vicinity to it; separately attaching a core-clad exhaust pipe and a jacket exhaust pipe; and treating finely divided glass raw materials by a vapor phase axially adhering method to prevent the raw materials from mixing. CONSTITUTION:A jacket burner 14 is set over a clad burner 12 of four-layer structure in close vicinity to the burner 12 so that the flames of the burners are continuously formed. Thus, jacket glass fine powder can be grown on clad glass fine powder before the surface temp. of the clad glass fine powder lowers slightly, thereby producing a porous preform with little difference in bulk density. In the vicinity of growing surface 160 of core glass fine powder and growing surface 162 of clad glass fine powder, core-clad exhaust pipe 18 with one end open is set. In the vicinity of growing surface 164 of jacket glass fine powder, jacket exhaust pipe 20 with one end open is separately set.

摘要： PURPOSE:To manufacture an optical fiber having low light-transmission loss, by etching the surface of a core-forming porous glass preform formed on a rod with the flame of an oxyhydrogen burner fed with a fluoride-containing gas, and at the same time, depositing glass soot to the rod to form the clad of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:An oxyhydrogen flame burner 1 having a multiple-wall structure is supplied with a glass-forming gas, H2 gas, O2 gas, Ar gas, etc. separately. The formed glass soot such as SiO2, P2O5, GeO2, etc. is deposited to the lower end of the rod 2 which is rotated around its axis and shifted upward, to form a porous glass preform 3 which forms the core of an optical glass fiber. The preform is heated, according to its growth, with the flames of the second and the third oxyhydrogen flame burners 4 and 5 having multiple-wall structure and placed above the burner 1. The burner 4 is supplied with a fluoride gas together with H2 gas, O2 gas and Ar gas and etches the surface of the preform 3 to obtain a porous glass preform 3' having clean surface. Glass soot is deposited to the preform 3' with the burner 5 to obtain a porous glass preform 6 which forms the clad of the optical glass fiber.

For example, when burner 11 is at the lowermost end and flame 12 contacts with the tip of conical growing part 18 and its vicinity, by increasing the concn. of GeCl4 in the starting material, the refractive index of the central part of columnar body 19 can be made higher than that of the peripheral part.

The compounds 6 dropped from the narrowed tip of the tube 12a are vaporized by absorption of heat from surroundings, and the vaporized compounds are introduced into the innermost layer tube of a multiply tubed burner 13 through a pipe 12d feeding starting materials for glass with gaseous Ar or the like introduced from a pipe 12c for introducing a carrier gas. Gaseous H2 is fed to the 2nd layer tube of the burner 13, and gaseous O2 to the outermost layer tube. By igniting the burner 13, the compounds 6 are subjected to a vapor phase chemical reaction to form fine glass powder. This powder is deposited on the tip or the outside of a rodlike substrate to manufacture a base material for a glass fiber.
